I didnt understand the ending of the world record segment? Did the guy free himself from the matrix after all or what?

It's left open-ended intentionally.

I think in one of the interviews, the main story was about him not getting in, but they changed it.

I don't think he did. The agents were keeping too close an eye on him after the race.

I'd love to see Bolt just disappear during one of his races, leaving no doubt he has broken free of the Matrix.
