one problem?

did they just sit around waiting for roy to loose his pills one day!? that could have been a long wait and they have no control over when it would happen!

There was no talk about Roys "daughter" before it happened. I reckon when Roy lost his pills, Frank began to think of the con. As Roy had told him, if he could find a huge score, he should take it. He found it when Roy lost the pills, and he took it

man, thats a big scam to set up that quickly! it involves multiple people, locations, money (which he says he doesnt have much of!) just seems like he'd been plannin for a while dont ya think!?

reply

We could assume that Frank had something to do with Roys pills being "lost", thus setting the wheels in motion for the scam when everyone and everything was ready. We didn't need to see this happen as it would have spoiled the later reveal.

"Well, I tried, didn't I? Goddamnit, at least I did that."

reply

Roy knocked his pills down the drain.

Also, yes, quite a lot of disbelief suspension is required to swallow the ending. A list of the highly unlikely occurrences would take an hour to write.

I think Sam Rockwell wanted to take advantage of Cage's OCD long before he actually hatched the plan. He was going to somehow get Roy to see the shrink he just needed the opportunity to kick start it. When Roy lost his pills, he went for it.

..put each other in your hearts forever because forevers about to happen here in just a few minutes

Agreed, needs a very strong suspension of disbelief, but still a decent movie.

After Roy lost the pills, he called the "doctor" he was getting them from and was told the doctor was gone...had "moved back east". Obviously Frank set this up and was ready to start the con when Roy ran out and needed more. Roy losing them all at once did nothing but put the plan in motion sooner.

aha! i get it now :)

Was the Shrink really a doctor or just a con artist/actor?

reply

Roy losing his pills just set the plan in motion sooner. If he had not lost his pills, he would have eventually run out of pills (maybe within a month), in which case the same con could have moved forward. I say a month because he had only one bottle; later in the film he asked for 6 pills to get him through the weekend. Hence, I suspect Frank had everything in place already.

Listen to Roy teaching his daughter a con...gotta be able to think on your feet and adapt to anything...the only thing you can control is the mark you choose.
