This is not even so much about Calpurnia as it is
About the military culture, about allowing certain people like Fischer, and Wendall into it. Our volunteers have sunk so low as to accept mentally deficient people and enraged maniacs as regular members of the military. During the draft era neither of them would have made it in. Either would have been given less than a adequate rating and been allowed not to serve.
Even though the leadership of this Army division was equipped with all the modern words and techniques to deal with these people they failed to stop what was inevitable. Ultimately it is a sad story of inefficient leadership that allowed such a thing to happen including the stupid "Don't Ask Don't tell" rules.
The acting was excellent and this tragic story was truly a tear jerker.
