Really dumb question, but...have to ask

Just saw this movie last night and wow, it blew me away. The acting was incredible, the script had such a sensitive understanding for a complex subject and was done in such a tasteful way, it was easy to suspend your disbelief that Calpernia was in fact, a man. I came here after I saw the movie and just about flipped my lid when I saw a real picture of Lee Pace (Calpernia). He was such a good actor, he had me totally convinced he was a real, transgendered acotr. So here comes my stupid but hopefully not too insensitive question. How did he get those boobs?! Was is makeup? Digital special effects? Old drag queen trick? I actually fell asleep during the last 30 minutes so I can't wait to see the ending even though I know it's tragic but when before I fell asleep, I was so mesmerized by Calpernia that after seeing Lee Pace, I had to know how they did the "special effects". Anyone like to enlighten me?

Actually, maybe it's your tv :) but they are pretty obviously fake in the scenes where they are shown exposed. And I don't mean fake as in implants, but fake as in glued on. It just looks like rubber and not flesh, especially the areolas.

Good eye..;-) But then I could say the same thing about all the beasties in Lord Of The Rings, Stars Wars and Star Trek....Farscape, you name it-watch them closely and you'll see the rubber/latex of their body parts jiggle as in FAKE...really nothing more than expensive Muppets-hardly believable to me, anyway.

Well, really it's a good tv :) They probably look pretty good on a standard 25" or 32" tube tv, but playing the dvd on an upconverting dvd player to 1080i resolution, and sending the HD signal via component cables to a large 16:9 widescreen rear projection set, makes it a bit easier to tell :) Not that I was really trying to tell, but it was really pretty obvious.

Wow, what a geeky reply I just had!

Nah, I admire a dude(or dudette) with a huge set of HD signals...;-) I have satellite and a huge conventional TV and I see the rubber/latex posing...

Hehe sorry that was obnoxious.

Callie is not a man. . .good lord. . .when will people learn? If you have breasts and a vagina, you are NOT male. Society is happy to label us based on our genitalia at birth, but not so happy to change their minds when we change our bodies.

reply

It's on the DVD specials. They were prosthetic and "glued" on.

reply

Shayna1980 this question was about the actor playing Callie who is a man so there is nothing wrong with saying 'he.' Many times people refer to the character instead of the actor. I know what point you are trying to make and I applaud it but do it when it is appropriate.

reply

The way the original statement was worded, I read it to mean the person was referring to Calpernia, not Lee Pace playing Calpernia. My response was not meant to convey offense, not in the least. Admittedly, I've run into many people who seem to refuse to acknowledge the 'change'. . .many in my own family in fact. I suppose my defenses did flair up. I do apologize.

Mine, too. I try to avoid them at all cost when out in a public situation.

Hey,
I found this clip on Youtube of the Behind-the-Scenes on this movie, where they do Lee's makeup and put on the breats. It's really intetresting:

Thanks for that. I really enjoyed the acting in this movie, very sad and shocking how mean people can be to each other but was some great acting in it.
