Does it get better the more you re-watch?

I tried getting through the whole series without skipping anything, but to be honest it was a quite tedious task. The second season was quite good, not many complaints there fortunately, however the first season was close to being borderline insufferable for me. The pacing was too slow (I normally have no problem with slower-paced shows; for example I adore both Mad Men and Deadwood), the narrative felt like a discombobulated mess, and none of the characters were really interesting enough to want to follow around. The cinematography was breathtaking, but that can't make up for much.

Do any of these things improve the more you re-watch? Do the characters become more interesting? Does the plot become more comprehensible and easier to follow along with?

Hard to say.

Personally I think it works better knowing in advance what a lot of the stuff means -- I.E. the diner scene in the second episode with Scudder and Management.

That being said if you found it "borderline insufferable" I can't imagine a rewatch would improve things.

I
think the
best route is
to expect the slow
build up. CyberGhostface-1
had mentioned it'd be a slow
burn. Basically I watched it as
if I were strolling through an art
exhibit. Since I knew there was no decisive
ending to the show, I figured enjoy the journey. And I did.

I'd say yes. But with Carnivale, kind of the whole point is to enjoy the slow pace and the journey. Because, I mean the show basically tells us what it is leading to and what the finale would be (the bomb going off) and the pilot's monologue tells us this fight to save magic is a failure, as we know the bomb does go off, so this is the story of the death of magic essentially. Whatever happens between Justin and Ben, the bomb goes off. And then last year based on Knauf's interview he just confirmed that that was the end.

So basically if the show is tedious to you, you probably won't enjoy it.

Even though I love crazy, out there supernatural stuff though I tend to prefer season 1 which was super slow compared to season 2, by episode 3 of season 2 it feels like they've gone over a half season of material already (compared to what they reveal in s1.) I suppose I just really enjoy all the characters because I don't find season one to be "tedious" much at all, quite engaging actually and I really found myself caring for what happened to everyone.

I find that re-watching the series I noticed things I had missed before. Perhaps because I knew more what to expect, but the whole thing made more sense.
