Just watched the whole series (Spoilers Galore!!!)

Let me get this straight:
Scudder is the 1st Gen Avatar of Dark who is Ben's Father.
Ben is the 2nd Gen Avatar of Light.
Ben's mother went crazy because she gave birth to an Avatar.
Belyakov (who is the behind the curtain Management) is the 1st Gen Avatar of Light.
Belyakov is the Sofie's grandfather and traveled around secretly in their carnival.
Belyakov is the father of Brother Justin and Iris (How come Iris didn't get any powers?)
Brother Justin (2nd gen avatar of dark) is Sofie's father.
Scudder and Belyakov had a battle with each other in WW1.
Their sons, Justin and Ben continue that battle with Ben finally winning.
Sofie is the new Avator of Dark, kills Jonesy and heals Justin at the end once she figures out that he's her father (Just like Ben was trying to save Scudder).

So who is Justin and Iris' mother?
Seems like both Ben and Justin got the "Boon" so what was the extra power they gained?
How come Ben can heal those people in the final carnival without everyone nearby dying?
What was the significance of the tree tattoo and nearby tree that caught fire?

There have been many generations of Avatars. There were at least a half dozen names written in the one Templar scholar's copy of the Gospel of Mathias alone.

Sophie is the Omega; the last of the Avatars as magic recedes and technology advances.

That was the meaning of the atomic blast visions. The avatar war is over, soon.
One more season would have been helpful to wrap it up.

Impossible is illogical.

Because she's not an Avatar.

reply

Iris is a Vectora and as such may have limited, vestigeal abilities.

As was stated here before: There were many generations of Avatars for thousands of years.
When I recall correctly Maria was the Alpha and gave birth to Jesus as the first (?) Avatar of Light.
One of the many Avatars of Darkness was Dracul for example.

Only the first born men in the line of Avatars become Avatars.
The only female Avatars are the Alpha and the Omega (Maria and Sofie).

And I think the idea was that the avatars didnt always meet each other physically in past generations. But events like WWI and the melting pot of America during the depression with mass migration made encounters more likely.

It doesn't say exactly, but the "Boon" is a couple of gifts. It gives them a better understanding of their powers and their goals and boosts their powers significantly. The extra power manifests in different ways; Ben was able to heal those people at the final carnival by directly sapping Justin's powers and lifeforce, as opposed to just sucking it from everyone and everything around. Normally, Ben couldn't always control where the lifeforce came from when he healed people.

The tree signifies the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. So far in the series it helps represent the Usher of Destruction, Justin, like when he built his new church in the same spot where he found the tree of his dreams. The Usher signifies the Armageddon in the series.

There isn't a whole lot more that can be explained since the series was supposed to last 6 seasons, with more of the mythology opened up. Granted it's Wikipedia, but the page I linked explains a lot of mythology that Knauf created for the show.
