Did no one take showers during the Great Depression?

I can understand that there may not always be good showers around, but it these people look like they simply never bathed at all. The women weren't quite as bad as the men, but I can't imagine being in their company for any period of time. The stench must have been overwhelming.

Nor did it look like clean clothes were much of a priority either, Ben wore the same rotten clothes episode after episode.

Was this really how things were then?

They discussed this on the DVD. It was hard to stay clean during the dust bowl, at least in the areas where the show took place. As soon as you were clean from a shower the dust would stick to your skin and you'd get dirty again.

I had the unpleasant experience of coming into close contact with many carnys (carnival workers) during the seventies. To put it mildly, their cleansing and grooming routines were evidently non-existent.

well, It wasn't called 'The Dust Bowl' for nothing...

and Anyone who has ever put in half a day doing hands-on Field work knows how easy it is to get dirty...

I remember picking Rocks as a Kid and despite being 'clean as a whistle' in the am by Lunch I'd be as dirty as Pigpen from Charlie Brown
