Netflix should produce new Carnivàle!!

Netflix should produce a season three of Carnivàle, it's definitely one of those shows that deserves a second chance and was designed in a way that could begin again.

Would love that.
I don't care how they do it but Carnivale should go on as a TV show or movies.

reply

That would be great!

QUESTION EVERYTHING.

It depends if they would give Knauf the full budget that he needs. I know he's said a couple of times that it wouldn't be worth making if they cut the budget down given all the work that goes into designing sets and costumes and whatnot.

reply

As nice as that would be HBO refuses to sell the rights. Last I heard the DVDs still make them a nice amount of money.

reply

I would be GREAT!

But the question is: Is it possible, in anyway, Carnivàle being brought back to life?

reply

I can't even begin to explain how much I would love this.
But since the a-holes at HBO STILL won't give up the rights... It will never happen.

reply

It won't happen and it would be difficult to do after 10 years anyway, unless they made the story also jump ahead in time.

Of all the great cancelled shows, this is definitely the one that's the most unfortunate, because we only got 2 seasons. But at least it never jumped off in quality.

reply

Arrested Development was brought back after 10 years. I know it's completely different, but they could figure something out.

I don't understand why HBO doesn't bring the show back. I think Carnivale cost 4 million per episode. I believe Boardwalk Empire is more expensive than that, and definitely Game of Thrones is. And now HBO keeps investing in fantasy shows: American Gods, The Leftovers.

Seriously, would Carnivale have low ratings now? There is so many people who loves it and HBO's audience now is interested in fantasy... right?

reply

I think, besides the issue of time passing and needing to get all the cast and crew back together, HBO would feel embarrassed to revive a series they cancelled 8 years ago -- it would be admitting they were wrong. Additionally, while Carnivale has a enthusiastic fan-base it's still not certain it would be able to get very big ratings even now, and I'm sure HBO does not want to take a risk that costly. Can you imagine if they had to cancel it a second time?

reply

Not exactly. Time has changed. Now there is more fan base for these niche productions such as Hannibal, American Horror Story. Even the power of social media I think the next Carnivale could has been next big hit!

The story had three chapters.
Season 1 + 2 are only chaspter 1 and were set in 1934 + 1935.

Seasons 3 + 4 would have been chapter 2 and were planned to take place in 1939 (S.3) and 1940 (S.4).

Seasons 5+ 6 would have been chapter 3 and should have taken place in 1944 (S.5) and 1945 (S.6).

Carnivale was great, but Rome was the most unfortunate in my opinion. HBO refuses to sell those right as well. They've made money on videotapes, dvds, blurays repackaged ad nauseam.

The only way it could work IMO is if they started from the beginning and Knauf would have to change the story some most likely, to keep people who'd seen it before interested. But being a decade old, most of the cast and crew would be unavailable. I like the original show, it was fantastic, but I just imagine I would find it very unsatisfactory if they tried reviving the story from where they left off.

And it's not like Arrested Development, whose fan base grew noticeably year after year, even if Carnivale has been found by new people it's obviously not on the same level of AD. So for those reasons they'd have to start telling the story over from the beginning.

Although they just added it for sale in the Google Play store today, $20 each for HD, I just bought them and plan on starting tonight after Sleepy Hollow. If they're still making it available for sale maybe more people have become fans than I realize...although I still think it's going to be impossible for Carnivale to live on how people in this thread want it to (as nice as that may be).

I don't think that would work. I can't imagine Knauf would have much interest in just redoing what came before and it would likely have a feeling of going through the motions. The quality would likely suffer as a result in comparison.

If for whatever reason Netflix were to buy the rights from HBO and HBO agreed (neither of which I see happening) they could just have the first two seasons available to watch.

As for the cast returning, I don't think any of them have their plates filled at the moment that they couldn't return. None of them have really hit it big and I've just seen them on occasional movie or TV roles.

Netflix doesn't have the financial means to do a show like Carnivale.
I believe that HBO should do it because it's their 'baby' and now with their massive projects like Game of Thrones they do not have the money to do Carnivale.
I can't remember where I read that supposedly the show was cancelled due to very high costs.

reply

High costs were the excuse HBO used, but in fact, it came in on the planned budget. HBO spent a fortune on Rome at the same time, and cut Carnivale as a result.

It didn't get the ratings because HBO gave it almost no publicity in the second season, and it ran against events like the Oscars, the SuperBowl, etc. It was just picking up the ratings again when HBO cancelled it.

reply

Which is a shame, because Carnivale was a far better written and more interesting show. Also, I heard Rome was WAY more expensive...and ended up being cancelled anyway!
