One of the writers (Ron Moore) wrote a lot for Star Trek. Among them the finale of The Next Generation and the darker stuff in Deep Space Nine. But more importantly, after Carnivale he developed the re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica. A very deep and engaging science fiction series with layers upon layers of politics, religion, mysticism, philosophy and of course science fiction. I suggest it to people with all my heart.

Now I'm only on ep 4 of Carnivale so I don't know how the show will turn out, but the surrealism and mysticism reminded me of Twin Peaks and Battlestar, so I can't say anything else. You can try True Detective..?

You might enjoy Season 2 of American Horror Story. It is easily the best and each season is self-contained so you don't have to watch the others. You might like Season 4 as well but there are a lot of mixed feelings about that one. I would also suggest checking out the first couple of episodes of Warehouse 13 to see if it catches your interest even though it ended. I also really enjoy Grimm but it also gets a lot of mixed reviews. All 3 series are available on Amazon Prime and I assume Netflix has them as well.

Hm you think Season 2 was the best AHS? I would have to watch it again, but I thought it kind of didn’t know what to do with itself, hence the kitchen-sink approach to horror elements (and sci-fi. Alien abduction did NOT need to be part of that show).

I preferred Season 1, it was much more cohesive a story and focused on one familiar horror element (haunted house) instead of focusing on a mere location (asylum).

As for OP’s question, True Detective definitely captures a similar atmosphere while being a markedly different program than Carnivale. I know I’ll get groans for saying it, but Lost is another good choice - early treatment of the “Jacob” character definitely drew heavily from Management.

But really, nothing out-out-Carnivale's Carnivale. It stands alone.
