This film is Underestimated.

In my opinion I thought I'll Sleep when I'm Dead is very underestimated film of 2004. The problem, in my opinion is alot of people expected it to be another Croupier but most of all Get Carter which isn't that kind of films. It is a character study of about a man's revenge. I don't know what the problem they had with Charlotte Rampling playing the older lover I didn't even think she played his mother. If anybody seen her in Swimming Pool you probably wouldn't blame Will Graham for having an older mature woman.

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead is like most of Hodges work.... underestimated.

I noticed that nobody yet agrees with me about this film being underestimated. But hey everybody intitled to their opinion. Last year, I watched this film at the local cinema. I must admit, I was almost felt cheated how it ended with Rampling character left behind while Graham goes back to Wales. I more or less expected a Hollywood type ending with more or less Graham going back to the house and killing the Irish hitman and rescuing his lady. Bit Corny.

Last weekend, I decided to rent out ISWID on DVD, I must say I gets better watching it after a couple of watches. It a film isn't about revenge, it about muscality (excuse the spelling). As for the ending it more or less how trivial the secondary characters are. You got Boad who rapes Davy just because he envied him. Frank the gangster who has taken over Graham, thinks Graham is still a threat and get the Irish hitman to do his dirty work.

I've got to say, I haven't even seen this film but I can draw a comparison with the fantastic 'Dead Man's Shoes' already.

'Dead Man's Shoes' and 'I'll Sleep When I'm Dead' do share a common set-up and there are more similarities but it was worth watching both for the differences in style and payoff. Both films have caused more reflection on my part than anything else I've watched on DVD in the last year or two. Many viewers will be disappointed by the way this film ends but Hodges was never going to just give us a modern remake of 'Get Carter' - leave that to Hollywood!
A remarkable film that stays in your head far longer than most movies.
Definitely underestimated.

Sorry, there is absolutely no contest between this, and Dead Mans Shoes.
ISWID falls down on so many counts, the casting (and characters) is painfully obvious, cliches abound, the plot has more holes than than a block of Emmental.
I feared for future success when Chancer came on TV years ago, Clive Owen is a BAD ACTOR - it is easy to be broody with a face like that. Closer? Well, an interesting script, but that too was over hyped and thoroughly unrealistic.
DMS is brilliantly done, realistic, and leaves the viewer posing many questions - but more like why, how do I feel about that, what if.... the questions left by this film are Eh? Wot?.
Thoroughly dissappointing.

super talented cast in a movie that has too many loopholes. i guess it's supposed to be an artsy/revenge movie? the movie was BAD overall. it had LOTS of potential, but it just fizzled 45 minutes later...

"say what you don't mean"

Not just underestimated, but also vastly misunderstood or inappropriately approached. I refuse to classify people who dislike a serious movie or 'serious' movies in general as something like an American Pie crowd, but the majority of complaints towards the film consist of variations on the notion that "it's boring" with little to no engagement of the material itself. The film is almost completely about it's characters and their relationships, specifically Will and his relationship with himself. The slow pacing allows a feeling of these identities and connections to develop and, more importantly than anything, simmer. It is one of my favorite movies from 2004 (when it was released stateside), my favorite being Before Sunset.

..ow...ound...round...ground! That’s a good name, isn’t it? I wonder if it will be friends with me?

I agree with you. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead is one of the most interesting revenge films in years, and a real gem of its genre. Sure, it has its fair share of cliche's, but the film isn't interested in tricking you. It's purpose is to examine characters relationships and reactions, and it does so masterfully. Not to mention it's brilliant cinematography and cast. A really fantastic film, but aimed specifically towards the patient, mature filmgoer.

Like Get Carter people will at some point will open their eyes and appreciate this film. Get Carter was also badly criticize on its release for it betrayal of violence.

c'mon, you mean you weren't bored to tears watching this? BAD, BAD MOVIE. it's like someone said "i think i'll throw in every revenge-movie cliche i can find, but the twist here is, i'll make it boring". as to it being "about the characters and their relationships", so what? EVERY good movie comes down to characters, that's just a given. for me some other givens would be interesting and/or original story, good dialogue, good acting, direction and cinematography, none of which this movie had. come to think of it, it didn't even have good characterization. it was like watching a bunch of stick figures walk around.

i'm glad somebody here said that clive owen's a bad actor. i've yet to see him give a performance i thought was even decent. he's just so utterly blank. which brings me to charlotte rampling. seriously, was she in a coma or something? look at the end; here's a hitman in her house, sitting two feet away from her with a gun in his hand, waiting for clive owen, and she has THE EXACT SAME facial expression as in every other scene. one of the worst actresses ever.

although not the worst i've ever seen (that would be a toss-up between "matrix revolutions" and "blow up"), i couldn't possible recommend this movie less.

Well everybody's entitled to their opinion.

Actually I wasn't bored. Must say I thought it was great

Not once did I feel bored watching this movie. I enjoyed it alot. Pretty basic story, but well executed.

Not to mention that Clive Owen is superb in all his roles.

I rented this expecting it to be good and to be somewhat of a modern day brit film noir judging by the title and seeing the trailer. But instead this was one of the most boring, confusing crime thrillers I've seen in a while.

First, didn't anyone originally feel confused about how the characters are related. I thought will was david's brother or father but wasn't sure, then throw 60 year old charlotte rampling in the mix and I'm thinking she's got to be the mother. But ofcourse I'm wrong, because every bad ass gangster killer dates a senior citizen. Then Mickser is close to all of them but its never explained why.

And throughout the movie were introduced to all sorts of pointless characters: the 3 meathead thug friends, turner and his crew. None of these characters affect the plot in any way and since we, the audience, already know who raped david from the start. This is why I think this movie was boring. To me it was obvious will would find the man and get his revenge, so if he's on a path of revenge the movie really should have been just his path. No sub plots unless they're a part of him getting from a to b. If you're going to use a subplot atleast have it throw the audience for a loop or connect into the main plot near the end; neither of these occured for me.

I was bored by this movie not because of the pacing but because of the wooden characters, bad acting, lame cliches and second rate storytelling.

If you want to see a couple of good revenge flicks that are also paced slowly I'd reccomend Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai and In the Bedroom.

Uhm, Einstein, I think it was pretty clear that she was already shot in that scene and lay there dying. I dunno but assume that that's the case (what else could it be?). What expression do you think you would have if you had been shot and been bleeding for a while? Happy? Afraid? Upset? Or perhaps an expression that shows you very weak, tired and dying, much like the expression she had in that scene...? I would think so.

But sure, Rampling has been type casted for some time now, and always plays that very conserved character in every movie i have seen her. That's her "thing" it seems. But in this scene it's very understandable with her lying there...that's kinda what dying people do...

I like this one.

It's a very straight-forward movie, the classic theme of old ganster returns, but as long as you make it good it works. Everything works its all a matter on how you do it.

And this movie is down-to-earth and realistic not extravagant. I really liked it. Clive Owen is again perfect as a narrating, stone-cold charcater, just like in Croupier (another Great movie) and lately Sin city.

In those three movies he plays sorta the same kind of character, but it really works on him. I hope though that he gets other sorts of roles, since I thinks he's a very good actor.

Anyways, good movie
