Depressed me (spoilers)
I rented this expecting a good revenge flick.....it quoted a review from Ebert saying "the best crime film of the year"...the summary made it seem like a cool, noir-ish film about a man who escaped his demons, who now has to return to his former life so he can avenge his brother's honor. For God's sakes, Clive Owen is in it! So, I popped it into my DVD player, and I hated it from the first 10 minutes. here is way too much of Clive's "woodsman hobo" character slowly drawling around, dragging his feet behind him, taking 20 minutes to do simple tasks (reasonable maybe if these tasks helped advance the plot, but they did no such thing here). Then a sleazy younf drug dealer/con artist gets raped by an auto dealer (ahem)....and then it's the guys' best friend looking for Clive Owen for the next 20-30 minutes....I was expecting a few things to happen (i.e.-when the friend is in the car talking on the long ride, and those creepy eyes keep looking back in the rear view mirror....I was anticipating some s**t to go down....but nope). Then Clive returns to his old stomping grounds, where he encounters three thugs in a bar, stares at them for 3 minutes, and you're expecting a big showdown, but alas; they're old buddies, and they hug, and then there's ANOTHER akward pause, and you think ok, NOW, he's gonna do some killing...but no. Clive walks away. Then he meets up with some guys, drives around, asks some questions to which the audience already knows the answer to, and in the last 15 minutes--gets a haircut. Then he kills the auto salesman's dog, then gives a short speech intended to psychologically screw the guy, then leaves.....the returns, and blows his brains out (in the only scene that actually made me show emotion). Then, it's over. I was hoping this would be a lot better, but it was a waste of film. Why mope around looking for a dead man's reason to die when the world is a BETTER place without him? I hated it, and I am dissapointed.
