Who was Helen?
Sorry for my silliness, but who was she? Will's ex-lover, sister, friend? Or is it supposed to be unclear?
Thanks

Yep she was his ex lover. She was the only thing that ruined the film for me. I just couldnt see Will with her at all, she was way too old for him and she just looked like someones frumpy aunt. I understand they wanted to show Will wasnt int othe usual glam gangsters moll types but he just wouldnt have looked at her twice imho. Bad casting.
"Damn fine coffee!"
I also strongly believed it was his mother. I had a few doubts when she was saying things like: "You left me here on my own" etc. but then when he said things like "you loved Davey almost as much as I did", etc. I went back to thinking it was their mother. Obviously apart from her physical appearance, which made thinking she might be an ex-lover much harder to accept. Bah...oh well....film over and that's what's important.
shareI still can't believe this. Even though Rampling looked damn good for a woman in her late 50's, she was still almost 20 years older than Owen. And it's not just me. In her review, Jamie Russell of the BBC wrote,
The hook here is our desire to know who these characters are and what connection they have to one another. But it's typical of the film's incoherence that we're never enlightened (is Charlotte Rampling playing Owen's mother, lover or both?).But an article in Sight & Sound quotes the director Mike Hodges as saying he felt that it would be "more interesting" if Helen were older, and that her relationship with Will was both sexual and maternal and that her sophistication may be the reason for Will's renouncing the criminal life. share
I thought she was his mom until this second.
