Your post is interesting, but I think it's funny that you made it at the time that you did. Ironically, Tim Burton just may win his first Oscar in a couple weeks.
I doubt he will, though, because the subject matter in Frankenweenie has some Science VS. Religion moments. And it tends to favor Science in those moments. The Academy tends to stray from movies that take a stance on one side or the other. Pity though, because it's a terrific film that deserves to win.
Not that I take the Oscars seriously anyway. In fact, it almost seems to me as though the Oscars may taint Burton more than honor him. A great artist or filmmaker is above the Academy. That's how I feel about the matter.
And I don't think Burton was attempting to win an Oscar with Big Fish. I do believe he was trying to impress us, though, and to show another level of filmmaking capability in himself as well as redeem and recover artistically from the disaster that was Planet of the Apes.
The Oscars were loaded that year. The Last Samurai, for example, is far better than ROTK, though we all know who won.
Sort of like Bill Murray in Lost in Translation. Now he's trying again with the stupid FDR movie but he won't ever win it either.
Hey, I love Bill Murray. But anything's possible when Mark Walhberg is nominated for one of those things.
I'm not a control freak, I just like things my way
