He never meant to end up here...and yet he did (???)

if he never meant to end up in Spectre...then why was he "early" and "late"?
I was watching the scene with Jenny (the scene I most loved in this movie) and this question popped in my head.
Anyway, if he was "early" and "late", was he early for Jenny since she was just a little girl when Ed first arrived? and then he was late the next time he arrived since both of them had their own family? was it? was it?
(sorry about my grammar, English is not my first language.)

Spectre was a metaphor for heaven in the world(the grass is so soft everybody walks with no shoes, the food tastes wonderfully, everyone lives in peace and no one ever leaves). That is why he was early(he took the short but hard path(in the wood)in life and in fact shorter than everyone ( even in Spectre ) had imagined). As for the second time he got to the city, the heaven was destroyed by the capitalism and that is one of the reasons he was late. He must have been there to save it. As for the second reason, yes it is Jenny who he was late for, as he had given a promise to return, but once he did, he already had a wife who he loved.
Anyway, this is just my opinion and it might be wrong.
