The casting was perfect

For this movie. I mean the you get Sandra Bloom looked an awful lot like the older one. And I didn't think much of Ewan McGregor's character compared to the older Edward Bloom. Then I looked up Albert Finney the actor who played the older Edward Bloom and I was astonished and amazed how he used to look when he was young. He looked exactly like Ewan, red hair and all. It was almost Eerie. They really did their research for this movie.

Agreed. Everyone was perfect, luckily the chameleonic Helena Bonham Carter was on hand to play the myriad of "everyone else" too.

If you ever get the chance to watch Albert Finney in One For The Road (opposite Audrey Hepburn) he plays a character who reminds me a lot of Ewan McGregor's portrayal of young Edward Bloom.

Totally, Ewan McGregor has been always described as the "New Albert Finney"

Don't forget Jessica Lange.

There are enough similarities in appearance between Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney for them to play the same character at different ages. But I did smile when Ewan told the 8 year old girl that he was 18. The lad who played Ewan's character as a boy was a really good lookalike. But I wasn't convinced by Ewan's accent. So while the casting got the features of the three actors playing the same character right, I wouldn't call it ideal.
