I may be the only one who absolutely hated his performance when it came to the Prophet/Angel sub-plot. I thought his character was just really unnatural and immature. Like why would someone say "I'm going to lose my lease" when there's an ANGEL in the room! I would be more focussed on why in the world there is an Angel in my room. I liked Justin Kirk when he was dealing with Lou but, and maybe this is Kushner's fault, I just thought that his lines were really odd and the way he said them was whiny and bratty.

Or maybe no one can match up to Emma Thompson's mastery! Her last monologue in Heaven is AMAZING!

You may be the only one.
Among other things he does shout "Oh God, there's a thing in the air, a thing, a thing" and is completely terrified. Also he's desoriented, sick (he's got AIDS) and probably tired because you know, it's nighttime, so it isn't out of the blue for him saying some crazy things. He says what comes to his desoriented mind.

I agree with you about Emma Thompson though. She is, along with the other actors, absolutely stunningly brilliant.

Nope, he's not. I too found Prior annoying and bratty. And what's funny- dude you have a chance at an afterlife, and instead you choose to go back to America and continue to die from AIDS. Wow. Idiot.

I think it's important to point out that you hated the scripted dialogue, not his performance. Actors don't choose their words, they work with what they are given. It's obvious the lines are meant to be comical and remember he's on a ton of medication. I think Justin Kirk was brilliant.

As if I really want to see a movie about you!

The fact that characters in a movie don't behave like dull and reasonable people is not a valid criticism. We watch movies to see something that in one way or another is out of the ordinary, something that makes us look at things in a different way.
