Streep was wonderful...

Meryl Streep's performance in the movie was wonderful.

I agree, but I'd slightly rephrase that: Meryl Streep's performances were wonderful.

Eh, I liked her better in "The River Wild." Not as "important" a film, certainly, but she seemed natural there. Not so much here. I don't care for theater tricks - accents, women playing men (except for the awesome Linda Hunt in The Year of Living Dangerously) - I have no problem with men playing female characters, I don't know why it doesn't work the other way.

And AinA was I started to hate Mary Louise Parker (nope, haven't seen "Weeds".) Was there a single non-gay-and-out human character in the play who was attractive AT ALL?

I remember one - Emma Thompson as the nurse. Nice little touch there.

I absolutely loved her as Ethel. And the first time I watched it I didn't even realise Meryl was the rabbi!

Meryl was magnificent, as always!

Yes...Meryl was wonderful. But Emma was even more wonderful, and I wish she had won the Emmy instead.

reply

No.... Emma was sublime! Love her!

They should've shared it
Both of them gave absolutely stunning performances in every character they played.
In every line of the beautiful script, they made every word count.

It's Meryl Streep. 'nuff said.

Her characterization of a Mormon mother reminds me of my Mormon mother. She was a Meryl Streep fan, and I would love to know her opinion regarding Hannah, but my mother died years before this was released.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...
