I can't think of anyone better to play the prior Prior Walters, aka The Ancestors, than Michael Gambon and Simon Callow! Simon particularly was awesome to behold in his Louis IV/VI getup, complete with mile-high wig!
Plus, Prior's "I'm gay" was one of the funniest lines in the whole movie!
I agree with you on that... Both Michael Gambon and Simon Callow played their parts exceptionally well! Michael Gambon played the medieval man to a "T"! He absolutely had almost no idea of what was going on... while Simon Callow played a more worldly wise Prior Walter. One thing that I hadn't realized until now, was that each of the Prior Walter's seemed to suffer from the, "Plague"; roughly 320 years apart. The Black Death... circa 1340's. The Great Plague of London... circa 1660's and AIDS... circa 1980's.
Oh! That's what it was! 1347 then 1666! ~700, 350 each.. yes.. I thought the second Prior was a reference to Cholera, although it mainly affected Germany region in the 1700s. And second prior was very much Louis XIV style or so... yes. well renaissance anyway...
