okay, I'll go easy... you get one favorite in Part 1 and one favorite in Part 2. Pick 'em and weep.
(I acknowledge that this is a bit of a steal from GI's 'SINGLE favorite line' thread, but oh well. I guess I'm tired of seeing all the angry trollbait threads at the top of the board.) Come on kids, let's have some fun! Remember fun? Favorite scenes.... go!
"I hate America Louis....that cracker that wrote the national anthem knew exactly what he was doin'. He set the word 'free' to a note so high, nobody could reach it". Always been the line and scene that stuck with me the most.
PART 1- the opening with Meryl Streep as the rabbi. She's just simply amazing in the scene and sets the tone perfectly for the rest of the film.
PART 2- Roy Cohn's death scene in the hospital. I'd never seen Al Pacino act so helpless in a film before, and this is one of the scenes that keeps him near the top on my favorite actor's list.
This is an absolutely amazing film. And all the controversy is uneeded. If you don't want to see any gay scenes (or any sex scenes for that matter) just fast forward. don't make a big deal about something that you don't understand.
Of course picking favorites is difficult, and I'd almost be depressed to try. I've read through the whole thread, however, and generally agree with nearly everyone. But I'm surprised that no one else pointed out a moment that I've always admired, since reading the play before the miniseries was made.. When Louis goes to the park for sex and ends up with that leather daddy and the condom breaks, it's deliberate that the actor is the same as Prior. When he goes looking for someone, he's really looking for Prior.
That said, that whole scene is funnier in the play. They cut some of the dialogue... And I hear tell that in the London production, the actors simulated the intercourse standing on opposite ends of the stage. I imagine it was a quite vivid moment in the theatre, but one that wouldn't really work on film.
Harper's monologue about human souls repairing the atmosphere has got to be one of my favorites ever written.
Part One: Really the whole thing, except the scene with Louis and The Man in the park. I think the man should have looked at least a little more attractive, even though it doesn't make a difference. Maybe my favorite part (if I had to choose) is when Harper talks with Mr. Lies for the first time in the movie. That scene always makes me smile. Part Two: I thought that Part Two was too...fantasy-esque. I guess it just breaks the mood of the first part a little. What I mean is, I think Part One is more "realistic" than Part Two. I think the ending, to be honest, was a little corny. I mean, people don't just go on like that (*snap*). You know? I think my favorite part in Part Two is when Emma Thompson has her monologue with Prior in front of the Council of Principalities. Her acting in general is always good. You could tell from that scene that she was a true Shakespearian actress, through and through.
Prior's revelation to Lou that he's infected. That was so tragically endearing. Prior was attempting to be sardonic, but the anguish on his face and the heart breaking line, "Because I was afraid you'd leave me, Lou" gets me every single time. That scene was effective simply because it dealt with two gay men as a normal couple, facing a potentially tragic situation.
Threshold of revelation - Mary Louise Parker was absolutely brilliant in this scene. For the first time her character is completely lucid and, through Prior, she's seeing her life for what it truly is, just as he is.
Part 4.
My favorite scene is Lou's seduction of Joe. It was sensual, seductive, and sweet, all at once. The look of fear, lust, and curiousity on Joe's face was exquisite. He was longing to indulge his sexuality, but having the hardest time getting over the proverbial hump. But Lou loosened him right up. The part in which Lou puts his hand down Joe's pants; tastes his fingers; before kissing him and asks, "What does that taste like?" To which Joe meekly replies, "cum..." It was everything for me not to have an orgasm right then and there(lol).
My favorite is probably the scene where Prior, Louis, Belize and Mrs. Pitt are sitting on the end of the Bethesda Angel fountain and everything after that, especially when they walk up the stairs at the end. WOW
You do realize that the man in the park is played by Justin Kirk who plays Prior right? They do it on purpose that way... and yes that's how the original playwrite wanted it.
Well, that's a tough one. I love the scene when Roy dies and Louis is trying to recite the Kaddish and Ethel appears and helps him through it and at the end, Louis says ... "it was a *beep* miracle" or something to that effect.
I also love the scene where Belize says, "...the (man) who wrote the Star Spangled Banner knew what he was doing when he set the note to free so high no one could reach it..."
I'm sorry if my quotes are a little off... it's been a while since I last saw the movie, but it really sticks with you.
Part 1: Roy is telling Joe about Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, and he gradually yells at him "Do you wanna be NICE, or do you wanna be effective?" It's a pretty badass scene, and as I appreciate things from Roy point of view.
Part 2: I don't remember if this was in part 2, but the scene where Harper is yelling for Mr. Lies while Joe is trying to talk to her. It makes me so sad for Harper.
In Part 1...It's an unbreakable tie. The Louis/Belize diner scene. One of the funniest and most brilliantly written scenes ("Real love isn't ambivalent.") And the Hannah/Homeless Woman scene. ("Why was the Kosciusko Bridge named after a Polack?") (Also, the abandonment scenes ("This man's heart is deficient. He loves, but his love is worth nothing.") And the Roy/Ethel scene at the end. "History is about to crack wide open. Millenium approaches." So brilliant.
In Part 2...wow. Another tie: Roy Cohn's death scene. Meryl Streep's performance there is brilliant. "And you could kill me, but you could never defeat meeeeee." I get chills. And the Roy/Belize scene where Belize describes heaven. (Also, the Prior/Louis scene in the park; the Louis/Joe "Have you no decency" scene; and of course, the first Prior/Angel scene.
Yes, I know, that's more than one. But it isn't possible to choose one. So there.
My favorite scene is in ep3, when Harper get an hallucination in Antartica, i can't stop rewatch this one again and again ... and still enjoy it each time.
I love Mary-Louide Parker, i love her big brown eyes and her smile. :P
