Mikey's cheating

When Mikey is playing craps, Shelly quickly "sees" that he's cheating with loaded dice.

I was wondering, does Bernie also know that Mikey's cheating? It would seem that he does, because he immediately recognizes that this means big trouble, even before Shelly arrives at the table to see for himself what's going on. But how would he know? He doesn't seem to have Shelly's expert eye for this sort of thing, and he himself is rather easily fooled, as we see throughout the movie.

I thought he might have been worried that Shelly would THINK that cheating was going on and would take it out on Mikey, even if the latter were innocent. But when they get into the basement for Mikey's beating, and Shelly initially suspects he was in on the con, he angrily says "I didn't know anything about this!" which would seem to indicate that he realizes there's a con going on. Is he just trusting Shelly's insight? If Shelly says Mikey's cheating, does he know Shelly's too good at this game to be mistaken, and he goes along with it?

(I wonder if they found Mikey's crooked dice when they started working him over?)

Flat, drab passion meanders across the screen!
