I haven't seen the film, but I saw the clip on Alec Baldwin's Inside the Actors' Studio. I was so shocked when he kicked her in the stomach, I felt ill. Then he went towards her and I was thinking "You monster!", but he pulled out the pillow and started going "Oh, it's a boy!" and I laughed so hard, mostly out of shock though I think. It was interesting, Baldwin said that when he read that in the script he slammed it shut, called his agent and told him there was no way in hell he was going to play a man who kicks a heavily pregnant woman in the stomach. His agent told him to keep reading and get back to him lol.
Don't think because I'm not saying much that I wouldn't like to say a lot.
Mu husband had the same reaction - he just refused to watch and got ANGRY! I had to tell him, "Keep watching! It's all a trick! She's not really pregnant!" It's a really visceral reaction - I was deeply shocked the first time I saw it too.

I'm surprised so many people fell for that. I thought it was obvious (to the audience, if not to Bernie) from the introduction at the restaurant that the pregnancy as just a useful for dine-n-dash scamming. Even though she had him feel her belly, I never thought the pregnancy was real. And of course she tries to use it again to save her bacon when Mikey's getting his ass kicked.
sharei knew from the scene where they ask for money that it was fake... that still kind of shocked me, but that scene where he gives his son the 3 grand at the motel room gave it away, you could tell they were pieced of crap

I wasn't as shocked or surprised as when I started seeing children getting shot and gunned down on TV shows. Examples would be The Walking Dead, the pilot episode of Pain Killer Jane, any number of Law & Order: SVU episodes, etc. I'm not surprised anymore, just dismayed that this passes for "entertainment", as if seeing adults gets splatter wasn't enough.

I'm a bit surprised that when William H Macey's character puts his hand on the 'pregnant' woman's belly and thinks that he even felt the baby kick.
Never having put my hand on a pregnant woman's belly this is just a guess.....
Even those two thugs who were down there with Shelly looked shocked. And surprised and relieved when the pillow came out. After all, they were down there to KILL Mikey, and yet kicking a pregnant woman was something they weren't prepared for.

I still yelled during that scene. Big shock!
I watched the movie again recently via HBO and remembered the scene
was upcoming when Shelly and his thugs took Mikey and his
fake pregnant wife downstairs to "teach him a lesson." I waited
for the moment when Shelly kicked at her belly and out popped
a pillow! I just LOL at the scene in question! Its such an
unintentionally funny scene to watch!
