The Time in Venice

At the beginning of the movie, Sutherland's character calls Theron's character on the phone. She says something like "Dad, it's early." This implies that it is morning where Theron's character lives in the United States. A few minutes later Sutherland and Wahlberg talk about the robbery they're about to do in Venice, where it is also early morning. Wouldn't it be afternoon in Venice? I don't remember where Theron's character is supposed to have lived but if it was LA, Italy would probably be 9 hours ahead. If she lived on the east coast, it would be six hours. I guess it could be 5 in NY and 11 in Italy. But even so, it looked pretty early in Venice. Am I mistaken about the time in Venice? Any help would be appreciated!

reply

There's a suburb called Venice in California, a few miles from the center of L.A. Presumably that is where Theron is and where the robbery will take place. So there's no contradiction.

I'm guessing they used Venice, CA so they could still call the remake "The Italian Job", cash in on people's memories of the original, and not have to change the title.

The robbery takes place in Venice, Italy. Did you even see the film?

Reed Rothchild: "Hey, are those lizard?"
Dirk: "No, they're Italian."

reply

No, I did not. Just saw the original yesterday and was curious enough to look up the new one. But imdb summarizes the remake as: "Thieves plan to pull off the heist of their lives by creating Los Angeles' largest ever traffic jam." So if that were accurate, I figured they had to have used Venice, CA. Apparently they have multiple heists and chases in this movie. I should not have theorized about a movie I hadn't seen. My bad.

reply

There are two robberies in the remake, one takes place in Venice, Italy. The second in LA, they do it "like the Italian Job" hence the title.

Reed Rothchild: "Hey, are those lizard?"
Dirk: "No, they're Italian."

I don't think all the Californians are speaking Italian in Ca. Best bet for the canals of Venice is Venice itself. I am amazed they got permission to make wakes like that in Venice since they have such a problem with that sort of thing and erosion in general. Somebody got off of some bucks. They claim Long Beach, Ca. but are only allowed to state one location. I bet all but the early part was filmed in Long Beach but the canals would be too expensive to mock up I would think. Maybe a budget larger than the Titanic would do it.... Lol

You're right, from time markers in the movie(times stated by Ed Norton's character Steve), John (in Venice) calls Stella (in Philidelphia) at approximately 8:00 am. With a 6 hour time difference, it would have been 2:00 am for Stella, when she received the call. If she had only said "dad it's early" (and dismissing the way the scene is lit) that might fly, but she goes on to ask him to come on by for breakfast, which probably wouldn't happen at that hour of the morning. Phew, hope this makes sense, these sorts of things tend to grab my attention as well.

What clues are there that it's early morning in Venice?

When they're about to blow the safe, they say that the woman took her child to school at 8 and the other guy left at 8:30 or something along those lines. I doubt she took her daughter to a school at 8 pm.

Why would you doubt that?

If the idea is to stay alive, I'm driving.

reply

Well because they said "as usual". So unless her daughter (which I'm guessing is a kid, otherwise why take her to school?) goes to night school, it's highly unlikely.

Thanks for your input (and sorry for reacting a bit late; I hadn't noticed this reply before), but that doesn't prove anything. The fact that they said that doesn't exclude the possibility that it was already around, say, 13h30 /around lunchtime in Venice.
