Dated Napster References

I watched this movie a few days ago, and was struck by how dated the many Napster references made the movie feel. I was expecting the movie to have been from around 2001, when the topic was still somewhat relevant, but it was actually released in 2003.

Why did they make references to something that was already so dated?

That's when that character would have been in college/university? When all that napster stuff allegedly happened?

Just how old were you in 2003, out of curiousity? Napster was still pretty fresh in everyone's minds when the movie was out. Hell, that same year it reopened as a paysite.

It was still the name people thought of when they thought of downloading music in 2003. But watching it now, it's VERY dated. I made me feel like I was watching a movie that came out a long time ago, because Napster seems so long ago.

At least he didn't say he started angelfire :)

It was long time ago its ten years since this came out so obviously its gonna sound outdated

The way technology turns around these days makes things more dated than they really are. I'm surprised Angry Birds is still going... But the Napster shout out was already dated in my mind at the time of the release, but I accepted it because I knew the character would have been in college at the time and Napster was still well known enough so it worked in context - and it still works now, because I know when the movie is set.

What I really hate is when movies say things like "Present Day". Nothing dates a movie faster than proclaiming the movie is set in the "present day".

What does it matter how relevant (or "dated") the reference is? The movie could be made 20 years from now and "the guy who let Napster get away" would still be a viable character.
