OVERATED, EXPLOITIVE CRAP

This is one of the worst movies about the disabled that has ever been made. If this movie was about a different subject matter it would have a 4.8 instead of a 6.8. No wonder Cuba Gooding Jr. is getting a Razzie for this movie. Hollywood's blatant exploitation of these kinds of subjects is disgusting.

Attention would-be directors: if you want your movie to be automatically liked by the masses, who can't think for themselves enough to separate the quality of a movie from the subject matter, just make a movie on one of the following topics:

- The Mentally or Physically Disabled Overcoming Adversity
- Racism
- Dying a Slow or Tragic Death
- Dealing with Homosexuality or Aids

You will have a guaranteed 'feel-good' hit, now matter how crappy your movie actually is.

NOW PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THIS PART BEFORE YOU REPLY:
I'm not taking any issue with those topics themselves - all of which are tragic and deserve to be talked about both in private and public, and which deserve to have GOOD movies made about them. What irks me is the fact that BAD movies about those topics get a 'free pass' even when they are still just a BAD MOVIE.

I'm sure Radio is a great guy and the real story is heartwarming - all the more reason it is an injustice to make a BAD movie about it!

AGREED hated this *beep* had to *beep* watch in school, my friend liked it, but i found radio annoying, the story uninspiring, and my favorite part being when the football team is mean to him. the only *beep* part i liked was the coach's daughter side story. *beep* this movie, IT SUCK DA EGGROLL BIG TIME

reply

Have you even been to the Coach's and Radio's website for their charities. Do you even know the back story?

How could you enjoy watching someone being abused and say that is your favorite part? Did you really think about that statement before you wrote it to be forever on the internet?

Instead of complaining, why don't you raise some money for their charity???

Why don't you write out a new script that you feel would be better?

Instead of just bitching, present better ideas. Don't just waste air talking.

Do something so that people may write a movie about you in the future not just remember that your favorite part is when disabled person is abused in a movie.

Unbelievable.

reply

actually, IMDB comment boards are the perfect place to bitch. No air is being wasted either, as I'm just typing.

This movie sucked.

reply

This is a great movie! I'm from Anderson and I guess you have to know Radio to know how well these actors did. My mom is a special ed teacher and in over 27 years she's never seen a case like Radio. These actors and the director did an amazing job.

this was a really good movie and a person to say this movie is crap is a person who really doesnt understand what this movie is about.

Hhhhhmmmmmm......
Well, it seems someone always has to be negative about positive things. What threatens you about this movie? Are you not able to handle a movie that is about a mentally retarded person? I don't understand why people must label something like this as exploitation. I'm assuming that you are referring to "exploitation" in the negative sense; so assuming that, the accurate definition (according to Webster) is "to make use of meanly or unjustly for one's own advantage". Where is the unjustness of meanness of this film? The unjustness was the way Radio was treated over 30 years ago. IF anything, it brought light to the fact that there are those who treat people unjustly. When you present something like that, you aren't glorifying the cruelty or making light of the handicapped; but instead, exposing the bad people for what they are...which opens the eyes of those who stand by idly as if nothing is happening around them. That sorta makes everyone responsible. Ignorance is no excuse....why not educate today's generation by pointing out the mistakes made in the past? I'm not saying to blame today's generation for mistakes made decades and generations ago (i.e., racism), but open their eyes to the mistakes so they won't make the same. Do you think that not seeing something like this makes it not be real?

And are you suggesting that movies shouldn't resemble real life? Should they all be fantasy, science fiction, etc.? I think this movie was excellent. Cuba was convincing. I was so excited to see actual footage of the real "Radio" and to know that his town has embraced him. This film seemed more like a tribute to him than an exploitation of him. It hurt me to see the way he was treated, but it thrilled me to see that there are other people living in my country that are willing to risk everything to stand for what is right and just....even in something as simple & unthreatening as befriending and educating someone who is mentally retarded. I have an aunt who is retarded, and I would hate to think someone had ever treated her the way they did in this movie...but I would be glad to see someone treat her the way the coach did and then to see her honored in this way.

I'll have to agree with everyone that I know who has seen this film....it is wonderful and ranks among my favorite now.

reply

This is exactly what I was talking about in my first post - a perfect example of someone who can't separate the QUALITY of the movie from the SUBJECT MATTER.

I have no problem with GOOD movies about the mentally disabled. I don't like BAD movies, and I have a problem with people overlooking the poor quality of the movie just because of the sensitive subject matter.

Edit: Looks like you edited your post to remove sticking your foot in your mouth, eh?

reply

So, you (Tojam0096) "have an aunt who is retarded [italics added]". You must be great fun at family reunions! The word "retarded" hasn't been considered proper for over 20 years. The preferred term is "mentally disabled" or "mentally challenged".

Don't you people think that this bashing each other has gone on long enough? Some of us don't want to read people's opinion's of another person's opinion. It just gets boring.

So, what! Does it really matter what term he uses if he is not using it in a negative way? What was your point? You had to say something to try and put him down because you just couldn't stand that his beautiful post made sense?

You are so obvious. Troll.

reply

I agree wholeheartedly. I swear, this movie seemed longer than The Lord Of The Rings. I was just waiting for this stupid movie to end. They could have summarized this plotless movie in probably 10 mins. Here, I will. Sorry if this sounds bad, people, but that's what this movie is about. **SPOILERS, if you haven't figured out what happens by just THINKING about it**

A mentally challenged African American (I'll be politically correct) person wanders around watching a football team. They are mean to him. The coach punishes the team and allows the kid to hang out with them (I was reminded of Carrie for most of this movie, did anybody see that too??). The kid gains popularity with the school. Two people don't like it and get him in trouble. Lifespans pass by with not one conflict, the kid talks more (although I couldn't understand a single word he said) and becomes unrealistically popular at the school. The coach takes him out to restaurants and grows OBSESSED with this kid, all the while abandoning his family. The kid's mom dies, he gets arrested, and then the world is all better again. At the Homecoming game, using his telekinetic powers, Radio starts a fire in the stadium during a football game, which kills all his enemies, along with everyone else. (Oh wait, that sounds like CARRIE, nevermind my throwing some actual INTEREST in). The end.

Here's an even QUICKER summary! I don't even need to indicate there are spoilers, because EVERYONE should already know the ending from the beginning of the movie. If not, then they should have a movie made about themselves.

A kid gets picked on ONCE for stealing something. A man sees this and helps him. He gains popularity, with the help of the man, and gets FREE stuff all the time so he doesn't have to steal. Everyone's happy and loves the kid. The end.

Now how can anyone honestly tell me this movie had ANY substance whatsoever? It had no conflicts, everything was always happy, and I didn't grow to like ANY of the characters. These people who defend this movie only say so because they don't want to sound like heartless people, but they secretly hate this movie. There are no redeeming qualities to this movie. I could see any conflict coming from a mile away, and sorry to say, I didn't feel sympathy for the mother because her character was so PITIFULLY established I couldn't gain any sympathy for her. 'Yeah, that's my son, don't know what's wrong with him, he has a brother, ya know, and I work long hours at a hospital.' Actually, NO CHARACTERS were established. Not even Radio. Not once did they mention any relevant fact like his age, but they couldn't even MAKE UP FOR THIS MOVIE what may have been wrong with him. I didn't like the coach either. Boring boring boring. The coach reminds me of the people who defend this movie. They want to look good to other people so they do things that they KNOW other people will appreciate them for, even if they don't honestly feel that way. Like, awww, this movie is about minorities; don't make fun... Be honest with yourself, people. It'll make for better conversation.

While I don't think this movie is Oscar-worthy (of course, I don't care for most of the movies that are nominated), I found this to be absolutely heartwarming and uplifting. Those of you who find this sort of movie to be "crap" must dread waking up in the morning.

You are so angry inside at the world.

Have you been to the real website for the coach and Radio? Do you know anything about their charities? Do you know that Radio has been attending school at this high school ever since and assisting with all the sports programs for over 30 years now?

Do you know that Radio's story is the reason that other towns have adopted similar disabled people in their town and elevated their life experiences?

No, you don't know any of this and I bet you haven't donated a dime or you don't volunteer for anything unless it benefits you.

They had to fit a thiry year relationship into a year in the movie. Next time why don't you volunteer the funding so they can produce a much more expensive movies for you tastes. Better yet, write the script, too.

These people took lemons and made lemonaide. Inspite of all the naysayers.

The coach volunteered much of is own time tutoring Radio.

What have you done for other except gift us your bitching?

nice post naturechild? you're taking the piss, right? do neither of you realize:
this is a TRUE STORY, not a story concocted to simply to entertain you. while some films ARE made to entertain, others are made to inspire. the only answer i can come up with for those who took nothing away from this 'movie', are either juvenile in age & intellect, or sociopaths with little to no conscience.
moving on, these 'conflicts' & 'characters' are real events & real people, not fictitious. i'm not sure what 'movie' you guys watched, but this one did have conflict, practically the whole basis, initially & throughout, was conflict.
also, i would like to add the performances were stellar. cuba gooding really nailed his role, as did ed harris & supporting. for those saying how hard is it to play a 'retarded' person, not only are you immature, but highly offensive. we aren't talking about the times you apparently clown with your buddies making fun of others less fortunate, but actors really channeling their role, which i imagine would be quite challenging as a person who's intellect functions normally to above average. this IS serious subject matter, & mr. gooding gave it the sensitivity & introspect it called for.
i kept thinking of sean penn's movie where he played a mentally impaired person, & cuba was far more convincing, not to take away from penn's ability, but to credit cuba. cuba gooding seems to be a highly under-rated & underused actor.

I personally loved the movie. There is a message in the movie that some seem to have missed. I think if you didn't get the message, then you probably wouldn't like the movie.

While the handicapped person in this movie is entirely lovable, the story is about the Coach, not the handicapped person. I think you missed the message?

What's it about?

Why the hell would they call it Radio if it was about the coach? Hmm.. let's think about this for a moment.

reply

How about the book Hatchet? It wasn't about the little axe, it was about Brian. Why didn't they name it "Brian Lost in the Wilderness?" Sure, the hatchet is important, but Brian is more important.

In Radio, the coach learns the lessons, not Radio. The majority of people in the world are not mentally disabled. This means the majority of the world can learn something just as the coach did. Notice Radio only grows to know others during the movie; he doesn't really learn a life lesson as the coach does.

Also, about the exploitation. Ever seen the movie The Laramy Project? It is about a murder investigation and trial of a homosexual man. It is a documentary and a must-see. Is this exploitive because it allowed money to be made off of a man's death? Or does it raise awareness of homophobia in America? Radio raises the awarness of mental retardation and how some people (individuals, schools, towns, etc) treat people with these disabilities.

All in all, the movie was good. The acting was amazing (work with mentally handicapp people and you'll see). You cannot say "the story was bad" or whatever due to the fact it is based on a true story.

reply

They didn't show this in the movie. Radio was given his name by the people of the town because of his fascination with radio's and how he carried one around with him everywhere.

This movie is about so many different areas of life.

Forgiveness.
Proactiveness
Community growth
The education and growth of a formerly uneducated young man. Actually, Radio was 30 years old when the Coach came into his life.
Healing
Redemption
Continuity
Leaving selfishness behind
A town learning that they don't know everything and can change.
Stepping outside of the box.

The result:

A charity was born.
A movie was made.
Selfish, self center teenagers and adults learned that there's more to life than themselves.
Radio was given a life time job of assistant coach in the sports program. And, he attends school every year till this day.
Every one who spends time with Radio is rewarded by being able to look outside of themselves and see life and develop empathy.
He was adopted in all but name by the Coach's family.
The Coach and Radio developed charities that help other disabled people.
They give speeches and raise money.

This was a lot of subject to cover in 90 minutes or so. Because the true story is over 30 years long.

I got the message during the first 20 movies Hollywood made just like this... it's just not a very good movie.

reply

It's an interesting analogy, to compare an actor playing a developmentally disabled person to a white actor putting on black face. I'm still pondering this... I work with individuals with developmental disabilities (whom we once called the mentally retarded), so I'm pretty sensitive to the mistreatment and exploitation of these individuals. Watching "Radio," I was enjoying myself but at the same time wondering if my enjoyment was something like, "Aw, look at the cute retarded boy." It's a very fine line they're walking by casting a person without disabilities to portray someone with a disability who is also very likeable. The truty is that people with disabilities have personalities just like the rest of us, they have traits you can like, and they can make you laugh...does it mean we're being exploitative when we laugh at something they do or say?

Back to "Radio"...it is a fine line, but in this case Cuba is portraying one individual, representing a real person, not just playing "a retarded man." So I won't judge the movie as harshly as I might have otherwise--Cuba's an actor in a sort of biopic. If he were just acting as a stereotypical "retarded" person (as if they're all the same anyway!), I would be very disgusted with the movie...but in this case, I think I'll cut him some slack.

Finally, the flesh reflects the madness within.
