Entertainment

This movie set out to entertain and achieved it's purpose.
Movies do not have to be deep and meaningful.
Neither do they have to communicate a political message.
It was 2 hours of escapism and that's all I wanted.
Well done!

TWN can be as deep and meaningful as you want it to be. There's the stereotype of the greedy capitalist, screwball environmental nutcase, and the phoniness of both. It has the angst of the man of conscience torn between duty to family and duty to himself. However, the deeper you delve, the more you reveal about yourself and not the movie.

How can anyone say this movie was deep and meaningful.
We are talking about Hugh Grant!!!!

I don't want this to sound like the Monty Python "Argument Clinic" sketch, but I did make the assertion so I guess I'll have to back it up. "Hamlet" is the sine qua non of deep and meaningful. (Pardon my French, but my English Lit prof liked to use the occasional Latin phrase to show how more erudite he was than us students.) Hamlet wanted to please his dead father and most of the major characters and some of the minor ended up dead at the end. George Wade made it a practice to do nothing to please his father, even after he'd been dead for ten years. Both faced parental pressure and both carried the emotional baggage of the experience. But, drawing parallels doesn't make a one-to-one correspondence since parallel lines never meet.
The soul-revealing rooftop scene is another case in point. Lucy confessing that her actions were for her mother's approval, which was never forthcoming. But she kept trying even though she knew it was futile. Introspective people are not usually so other-directed.
The music also dove-tailed nicely with the message. On the yacht, the instrumental "If I had you I'd changed the world" was played. By the end of the movie, Lucy and George had done something even harder--they'd changed themselves.
I could write about satellite charcaters like Lucy's mom and dad, because they also had some interesting psychological baggage that made them the way they were, but it might reveal too much about mine.
