I notice this movie is now the ALL TIME #1 rented movie at Netflix.com despite the fact that:
1) I've never heard of the movie until just now 2) Its average Netflix rating is only 3 stars 3) Its average IMDB rating is only 5.9/10
Anyone know what suddenly caused this movie to take the #1 Netflix spot over films like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Catch Me If You Can, The Italian Job, etc?
I liked the movie. You could tell exactly were the plot was going.Boy meets girl. Boy Screws up with girl. Boy wins girl over. The movie was better than I was expecting though.
"Chill out, it only means that a lot of people have rented this movie; it doesn't mean that it's a great movie, just that many people found it interesting and watched it, that's all.."
I think you misunderstand my question. Yes, by being the #1 rented movie of all time at Netflix, it means a lot of people have rented this movie from Netflix. Hence, it's the #1 rented movie of all time at Netflix.
My question is, why is a film which did not receive particularly good reviews, did not receive a great deal of fanfare or publicity when it was first released, and apparently is not even very good OR very popular (based on Netflix and IMDB ratings) the #1 rented movie of ALL TIME at Netflix.com?
To put this in perspective, the following are movies currently ranked #2-7 on the Netflix charts.
Road to Perdition My Big Fat Greek Wedding Catch Me If You Can Chicago The Italian Job Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
By and large, all six were major hits, several of which grossed hundreds of millions of dollars and at least two of which were Best Picture nominees. Two Weeks Notice had, by far, the lowest box office gross and the lowest ratings of these seven. And yet Two Weeks Notice currently holds the #1 spot.
I am not saying anything about whether this is a good or bad film. I am simply asking, of every movie which has ever been released on DVD in the history of movies, why is this film the most-rented EVER at Netflix.com?
that is odd...but two weeks notice really isn't a bad movie..it's one of the better romantic comedies of the last few years it is not the spoon that bends...
"that is odd...but two weeks notice really isn't a bad movie..it's one of the better romantic comedies of the last few years"
Well I finally got around to seeing it, and you're right that it's not too bad as far as movies of this type go. But if anything, it further deepened the mystery of why it ranks #1 all time.
If there were something really controversial about it, I could understand why Netflix customers are flocking to this film. Or even if it was horrendously bad, something like Gigli, I could possibly imagine tons of people renting it just too see how bad it could be (especially considering nobody saw Gigli in the theater). And of course if it were a major blockbuster, it would make sense that lots of people would rent it.
But it really was just... "Good". Nothing really incredible about it, nothing really bad about it, nothing really unusual about it in any way as far as I can tell. It was just a typical romantic comedy featuring typical Hollywood stars, pretty much like dozens of other movies that are also on DVD.
If anyone else knows the answer to this mystery, please enlighten us :-).
This a brilliant movie, made by two charismatic, likable leads. Yeah its traight forward, but the chemistry is real, and they are both so funny. This is my favourite movie (thats not in my own top ten)
you wanna know why this is the number 1 movie on netflix? it because alot of people that like sandra bullock are ashamed to admit it. her movies are usually not as good as she is and anyone who says they want to go see a sandra movie would probably be meet with "oh why should we see that as we know it wont be good". i know i hear it and im a big fan so people who arent as big a fan as me would probably not get their way. so people probably watch it when they can do it privately or whatever. also alot of sandra movies that arent particularly hits always go well on rentals for some reason, she may not be the queen of the box office but she may be the queen of rentals. by the way to poster that said all the other net flixs movies grossed alot more is just not true. the italian job grossed 100 mill and two weeks grossed 93 mill. and it was up against stiff competition. lord of the rings, gangs of new york. quite frankly it should have grossed more whern u think runaway bride could gross 150 mil. two weeks is actually a romantic comedy that is atleast somewhat more successful than others of the genre for being romantic and funny!

Interesting theory, but if it were really a primary factor in making Two Weeks Notice #1, we should expect to see several other Sandra Bullock movies scatterred throughout the Netflix Top 100. However, by my count there is only one (Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood) at the #59 spot.
The effect you describe may in fact exist, but it does not appear to be strong enough to truly explain the #1 ranking.
"by the way to poster that said all the other net flixs movies grossed alot more is just not true. the italian job grossed 100 mill and two weeks grossed 93 mill."
According to the current IMDB listings, The Italian Job grossed $106 million while Two Weeks Notice grossed $93 million, a difference of about 15%. The IMDB rating of the Italian Job is also about 17% higher than that of Two Weeks notice (6.9 vs 5.9). Of course, The Italian Job is also the lowest ranked of the movies listed (#7). Of all the other movies I listed above, all were rated far more highly (Road To Perdition), grossed many times as much at the box office (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) or both (Lord of the Rings).
My point was, by looking at the combination of box office gross and ratings, Two Weeks Notice was clearly the lowest among the top-ranked movies, yet it still holds the #1 spot despite that disadvantage.
another reason why i speculate it could be #1 is because sandra hasnt done a movie w/ a a high calibre actor in a while so it has increased her profile and audience! divine secrets isnt a story that would usually gain a #1 spot and audiences unfortunately dont like sandra in thrillers so murder by numbers is out! i wonder what kind of records would be broken if sandra could find a movie that fully showcased her talent and then maybe she would be breaking more that netflix records!
by the way is netflix a worldwide site cause two weeks notice grossed around 200 mil worldwide, im not sure what the others did! also another point is that rom coms dont always go as well at the cinemas as other genres for various reasons, but can go well elsewhere. so that would maybe exp[lain as to why it was one of the lowest but then one of the highest on netflix cause more people may have seen the others! darn it, im takin away from the movies success! anyway i may be biased but in terms of rom coms it is better than alot of others to me!~
