Am I the Only one?

Who found this movie to be a colassal bore? I have nothing against Sandra Bullock or Hugh Grant, but something about this movie just did not work for me...it just could not hold my attention and its appeal escapes me.

reply

I'm watching it now and it's horrible ... maybe thee half-laughs the whole thing so far - no chemistry - just plain bad.

reply

I disagree with you about the chemistry. I think Bullock and Grant have excellent chemistry.

I agree, too. This movie was very disappointing.

reply

I have to agree i found this movie a little disappointing too. There didnt really seem to be any genuine chemistry between the 2 leads, or natural charactor development. Instead, apart from a few scenes, instead it just seemed to move along at some predetermined formulaic pace.

I cant quite place my finger on it but although this had the ingredients for a great film it just didnt seem to work as well as it could have. Dont get me wrong, it wasnt really bad or anything, it just wasnt that good either.

reply

Excuse me if I got the facts wrong on this awful movie but is the audience expected to take this story seriously? I just remember Bullock as this liberal environmental activist attorney who all of a sudden becomes a stuffy corporate type. I know this occurred for a reason but she seemed to sellout fairly easy to her principles in a mere 2 or so weeks. Typical Hollywood with no understanding of the everyday life.

reply

Ah... No. Not supposed to be serious - hence the 'comedy' nature of the film. It's light fluff - if you're looking for the deep and meaningful, try something like 'the piano'.

Someone referred to this comedy as a 'guilty pleasure' - I guess watching a film like this is like sneaking off and scoffing a box of chocolates by yourself. It's not deep, it's not making 'a statement', it's not supposed to change your life. Whether or not it is good always depends on your personal taste, and nowhere does this apply more firmly than to comedy. You either think it's funny or you don't, and you just can't persuade anyone else to change their mind if they don't agree.

This film reminded me a lot of those old 'screwball comedies': the dialogue was very fast-paced and witty, the story was predictable (I mean, frankly, did any of you go into that cinema thinking Hugh and Sandra wouldn't end up together? And don't tell me you went in there, KNOWING they would and then wasted all that energy getting angry because they did?? Tsk, tsk, tsk!) and there was no sexual chemistry between the two main leads but you could tell they were having one hell of a laugh together - hey, that's all I expect from a "rom-com".

I'm not a big fan of Sandra Bullock but she has good comic timing. And Hugh Grant is a scream. Unlike many of the A-list so-called comedic actors, he is actually genuinely a very funny and witty person - even (especially) without a script. If you've seen interviews with other comedians you will know how self-absorbed they can be - how seriously they take themselves and their (haha) "Art". But Hugh Grant is not averse to having a good laugh at his own expense and that comes across in this film. The fact that he usually plays a variation on the same role (Hugh being Hugh) can be tiring after a while but a little dose of it now and again never does any harm.

are you kidding i love this movie! its one of the best of all time and i love sandra bullock

reply

I love both Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant... But I can't stand this movie.

reply

Eh... yeah, I wasn't too fond of it either.
But I'm not going to bash it, because I LOVE Sandra Bullock... but... a friend at work had told me about this movie. She said it was GREAT, and after telling me Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock were in it, I thought, "I bet that is a good movie!" I then forgot about it, then later noticed it at one of those DVD/computer/game systems stores, where they sell stuff pretty cheap. So, I picked it up for about four dollars...

And I was a little disappointed. I think I laughed once or twice. I had to finish it over about three or four nights, because I just couldn't sit still during it.

I thought for being made in 2002, it seemed more like 1995. I mean, it had great potential, it just didn't follow through. There was nothing that surprised you, or shocked you, or even really made you say, "Awww."

And, although it's obvious in a lot of movies like this that they're going to get together, it's like the movie, because of the DVD cover, spoiled it all before you could watch it. I mean, you usually KNOW they're going to end up together, but come on, make us think a little bit??? And with all the bickering between them, all of the sudden, "I'm in love with you." "I'm in love with you too."

It was a little to cheesey and made me cringe a little, heh. I mean, it was okay, but not something I'd watch again, probably. But I didn't hate it, and certainly don't hate the actors in it! :)

I'm watching it right now, and I really like it. One of my favorite "fluff" movies. Definitely a no-brainer, but I knew that going in. So I have no problem with it.

How's this gonna work if you don't do what I say?

reply

To the OP, nope, this movie bores me too. It's sad because I love Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock & you'd think the combination would have worked better but the script/story was not good and their chemistry wasn't even that great either.

reply

I agree. I love the two, but this movie doesn't work as well.

I don't hate it, it's not the worst movie ever.

I'm sure I'll watch it again on a rainy day, perhaps.

This is basically the worst movie I've ever seen.

Freedom. Beauty. Truth. and Love.

It's not a horrible movie or the worst movie ever (some posters really exaggerate), but it's not as good a movie as most in its genre (romantic comedy). There seemed to be something missing, not exactly sure what it was (soul maybe?) Also, Bullock's character was a little flat.

Not the best Sandyflick but by no means the worst (for that try "Premo".)

In the 2WN DVD features , she makes a revealing comment: "I'm done with romcoms. As long as my accountants tell me I'm not broke, I'll make whatever I want & won't care if they make money or not". A brave but somewhat reckless comment. Judging by the string of disappointments that followed ("Murder By Numbers", "Lake House" - though that has its enthusiasts, like me, and made a fair return on budget - and "Premonition") her main Achilles heel is script selection.

Possibly she's learned her lesson, and is returning to her strengths. My wife & I are waiting for the release of "All About Steve", and "The Proposal".
