Don't see any other threads about this...

...but was what up with the Chinese food place? I have never once in my life ordered Chinese and had the person taking the order ask me how many people were going to be eating it.

Besides the fact of how ridiculous it is to think she'd actually eat all that food. And ugh, the bangs.

Seriously, though - the Chinese food thing to me is completely jarring and practically ruins the movie...am I the only one who feels that way?

well at the place we go they do ask you, because they need to know the amount of food they need to make, so they're not cooking for 3 instead of the 5 people that are actually eating for example. it also indicates how many fortune cookies to deliver as well.

She was ordering take out - you say if you want more than one order of something or a larger size. They always make the same amount unless you request (and pay for) more.

It may be a reference to the old vaudeville joke about still being hungry after you eat a Chinese dinner. And so she ordered several. However, many people substitute the eating of food for the lack of something more satisfying in their lives so it sets the stage for her falling in love with George.

Lucy eats when she gets upset. She mentions it while at lunch with
her parents.

Mr. Kelson: Wow, the whole left side of the menu! I'm proud of you, honey.

Lucy: Yeah. You know I eat when I'm upset.

That's probably not the exact dialogue since I'm writing from memory.

And she regularly orders from that Chinese restaurant, as indicated by her small talk with Mr. Wong (I think that's the name she says). He probably asked if it was for one because of the amount of food she was ordering and he knew how she eats. Hence, at the end she says, "No, actually, this is for two."

House: Climb out of your holes, people!
