People think OCD is harmless. Its aggrivating.

Before my meds my OCD really messed with me. I dont know how many times I was late to work because I was busy making sure my front door was locked, my coffee pot was off, or something else rediculous. Sometimes my neighbors would see me get in and out of my car 4 times. Other times I would ne half way to work and turn around and go back. It irritates me when people have quirks or like things a certain way and giggle " im ocd"...... You dont know what it's like to sit there and set your alarm clock 10 times to make sure ita set.

No you arent and it ain't cute or funny.

Murder isn't harmless either....and pretty aggrivating...

reply

I'd say it was more inconvenient than aggravating.

reply

Almost losing your job because of it. Yeah .....inconvenient......

reply

Almost? Yeah, that's inconvenient.

While I agree it's frustrating when people joke about having OCD when they are just quirky, I don't think Monk is one of those cases. He seems to have legitimate OCD, and did almost lose his job many times because of it. His life doesn't seem cute or quirky, it seems very tough. His struggles are brought up very frequently on the show.

reply

First Episode, he could barely perform his job worrying about whether he remembered to turn the oven off.

To Love and win is the best thing. To Love and lose, the next best.

One of the great things about this show is that it paints a very accurate picture of OCD, showing just how debilitating it can be, but still managing to make us laugh. The humor is done in a way (at least I think) that doesn't make fun of mental illness.

I've met people who do that and it is a little annoying. On a bad day for me a simple every day task like making a cup of coffee can take upwards of 20 to 30 minutes because i'm going back and forth to the sink to wash the pot out over and over again.I've thought about meds for a while but haven't made that leap yet.

reply

I don't consider myself OCD -- but I do have enough little hangups (like wanting things parallel) that I can kinda sympathize with Monk. Maybe the show was so popular because a lot of people can see aspects of themselves in Monk?

My little brother has it. He hates how social media has basically "glamorized" it. Like it's fun or something.

He says it's a pain in the ass & wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Yeah, no. Just because someone doesn't have YOUR level of OCD doesn't mean that they don't have OCD. OCD has several degrees to it:

Total scores on the measure range from 0 to 40, with a score of 0–7 indicating subclinical symptoms, 8–15 mild symptoms, 16–23 moderate symptoms, 24–31 severe symptoms and 32–40 extreme symptoms.

reply

Really? If the experts claim that even someone with a score near zero has OCD symptoms, merely so mild that no treatment is warranted, they're saying that absolutely everybody has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder to one degree or another. Maybe they should stop calling it a "disorder" unless it interferes with the person's life so much that they want to do something about it.

reply

Yeah, no, they're not saying that. That's just how you're interpreting it. 0 is the beginning of the scale. If you don't have it, you won't fall into any of those ranges.

reply

Oh, OK, so their "zero" doesn't mean "no symptoms whatsoever," maybe more like "no significant symptoms." Thanks for clarifying that. Medical terminology (or any technical jargon) can be confusing to people who aren't in the field.

I HAVE A LOVELY LITTLE MIX OF OCD,ADHD WITH A SPLASH OF AUTISM...MAKES ME REAL INTERESTING...I SELF MEDICATE THOUGH...WHICH REALLY EVENS ME OUT AND ALLOWS ME TO RELAX AT TIMES.
