Realistically they only spent a small fraction of the day digging

if they only had to dig one hole a day. Digging a 5X5 foot hole really isn't that hard. I'm a very small female who NEVER works out and is not strong at all, and today I decided to dig in my backyard looking for artifacts. I didn't intend to dig as far as I did, but when I was finished, in about 1.5 - 2 hours, I had dug a hole about 3 feet deep and 3 feet wide. Not only that but because I was looking for artifacts as well as digging in incredibly rocky soil, I was stopping frequently. Surely it would have taken me only about an hour to an hour and a half more to get to 5 feet by 5 feet, but I had to call it quits because my mom was getting home soon and I wasn't supposed to be digging.

"Rocky soil" is not the same thing as digging in dirt that has been bone dry for the past 100 years, in the oppressive Texas heat with zero shade.

Also, you didn't really dig 5x5 so that is another level of fail.

What are you going to say next? You had a bottle full of icy water and a mini-fan?

For the record, I didn't have any shade; I was working in 80 degree heat with the unfiltered sun on my back.

No, I didn't dig a 5x5 foot hole and I admitted to that. However, based on how far I DID dig in the given amount of time I DEDUCED that it most likely wouldn't have taken more than a few hours to dig a 5x5 foot hole. I don't quite see how that's a "fail" but if it makes you feel better to say that then go ahead.

As for water, I drank from the hose because I didn't want to track dirt into the house and was too lazy to take my shoes off on the porch.

No need to be a dick, "wizard boy".

Here is what you are not considering:

1. Heat, minimal water and inadequate food.

2. Your hole was 27 cubic feet, assuming it was 3 x 3 x 3. A 5' deep, 5' diameter is almost 100 cubic feet, close to four times larger than your effort. That is an 8-hour job at your pace.

3. The deeper the hole, the harder it gets to dig because you have to lift each shovel of dirt that much higher. You'll note the kids in the movie actually had to throw the dirt away from the hole once it got to a depth of 3-4'.

4. You only dug one hole. Try digging the same hole each and every day for months.

I'm guessing it took those kids at least 6-8 hours a day to dig their hole. They went out at dawn and were probably back in camp by late afternoon, accounting for rest breaks and travel time.

You didn't come into this life just to sit around on a dugout bench, did ya?
