It's been at least five years since I read the book, so I don't remember those details exactly. But in the movie they dart around the details. They make it sound like he did, but they never say for sure. They simply said he went to the hospital and didn't return.
However, I just looked the novel up on Spark Notes and they say the same thing that the movie makers did as well - he is in the hospital and will not be returning.

Yes, that's all that both book and movie say. Presumably he survived, but they weren't harsh enough to send him back to Camp Green Lake. So he got what he wanted! I thought the actor was much too hot for the name, by the way.
shareI have just completed the book. According to the book he did die but they didn't tell Stanley the truth. One of the boys later told Stanley about Barfbad.
