Sam related to Madame Zeroni?

Was Sam somehow related to Madame Zeroni? It was really never explained why the lake dried up after he died so I figured it had to do with Madame Zeroni's magic.

In the book (and I think in the movie too) it was implied that the lake drying up was supposed to be a punishment from God for murdering Sam.

Once upon a time there was a magical place where it never rained. The end.

Yeah in the book at the end of a chapter it says "whom did God punish?" And that refers to the lake drying up. God didn't punish Kissin Kate for kissing Sam, but the town of Green Lake for killing Sam.
