Zero was the smartest kid out of all of them.


Watching this now, I finally understand why Pendanski had such a bizarre antagonism against him. Zero could totally see through all of that crap he was throwing toward all of them and only spoke when he needed to. I think Pendanski this, and it angered him to no end. What do you guys think? As a kid I didn't pick up on it.

Yeah, I love when films consider things like that. It actually works for character development.

Oh yeah definitely, even the book, if I remember correctly Pendanski could not STAND Hector and it drove him mad that he couldn't get reactions out of him like he could the other boys. Hecto was wise for his age, even if he wasn't "technically" smart but definitely a smart kid.

Man, that whole scene before Hector knocked him out and ran... he was just antagonizing the kid.
