Isabelle's Sanity???!!!! (Discussion)

Alright; as I have become a BIG Eva fan over the past three months, I decided to give The Dreamers ago, I didn’t know if I would like it as I’ll be honest when I say I didn’t understand the trailer- but after watching it, and deciding it was a true masterpiece in the world of cinema and film, I was quite happy to understand everything except one thing, and that was Isabelle’s sanity, it is obviously not right judging by the scene where she is banging on her bedroom door for Theo, but I wondered why?
I came to this conclusion: In the scene where Isabelle goes to fetch her Father to meet Matthew he grasps her waist, now normally this would be an average concept, but it was the way that the director chose to put it into Matthews observations and close up on the hand on the waist- I personally thought that Isabelle was abused by her Father, obviously not raped as she was a virgin when Matthew took her, but I definitely think there was some sexual abuse in there, and that’s what made her need to clasp on to her childhood, and that comes with the relationship to Theo, I could be completely wrong and would love to hear anyone else’s opinion on the matter!

I think you're right. The scene you mention with her father's hand around her waist lingered for a while which would suggest something is not right. You should also consider the fact that Isabelle originally refused to let Matthew into her bedroom. When he's finally let into her room, it's apparent that Isabelle is still very much like a child. She has teddy bears and several other little girl items. It's as though that room is her safe zone where she isn't sexualized. I would also agree that if her father abused her, it would have a lot to do with why she and Theo came together the way that they did and why they prefer to live in a fantasy world of movies than in reality.

Have you seen Cracks or Womb yet? Those are two more of Eva's brilliant movies. Cracks is probably my favorite of hers.
