Do you think Matthew was a virgin?

Do you think that Matthew took Isabelle's virginity as well as lost his own? I'm unsure if the answer's in the film or not, but I think he was a virgin also.

No, I don't think so.

After viewing the film I assumed he wasnt a virgin before he was with Isabelle, however BedHead91 is absolutley right, that quote implies he is

uhm no.
she could've been extra tight being a virgin and having her bare arse on the cold kitchen floor and/or he didn't want to try and force himself into the wrong hole and/or he wasn't hard enough... but i think he was just asking her to guide him in so he wouldn't have to fumble around.

i don't think he was supposed to be a virgin and he lasted quite a bit to be a virgin tbh.

I thought he was but I think that's up to the viewer to decide, although it is implied that he is when he asks Isabelle to guide him, but that could also mean that he was just having trouble getting erect and needed a helping hand so to speak:)

What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about??? ô¿ô

I agree. He was a virgin. When he and Isabella were having sex for the first time, he acted as if he didn't know what he was doing and he asks her to guide him to which he eventually did it right.

They both were.

I thought quite a bit about this question myself, really throughout the rest of the film. There was definitely an innocent quality about him and initially I was almost certain he was a virgin.

But the more I thought about it... I believe he was asking for help to get erect, not for guidance. I think we can all agree he was probably having a difficult time because of the intensity and bizarreness of the situation.

Afterwards when he has the blood on his hand and the way he grabs and kisses her... He did it with such passion and awareness of what she had just given to him. I imagine his reaction would have been different if it was his first time too. As an aside, it was, to me, was one of the most emotional, heart wrenching, and erotic scenes I've seen on film all year.

I agree with this. I think the "help" he was asking for was primarily in getting an erection, and possibly to help guide him in because he didn't want to fumble around too much. I doubt Matthew was very experienced, but I think he was not virgin. And he just assumed Isabelle was also a non-virgin because of the sex play between her and Theo. If he did need help guiding him in, I'm betting it's because he didn't want to disappoint her because I think he assumed she was more experienced than he was.

I think some people take Matthew's "innocence" a little too literally. Remember, he was from San Diego and it was 1968 in the film. He was not some small town boy from some backwater. San Diego is not a large metropolis, but it's in California. If he was studying abroad in Paris, then he was already aware of the protest movement and "free love" hippies back in the states, especially being from California. He was educated and a film buff,so I've never cottoned onto to him being completely green or a novice. So have no problem believing he was not a virgin. I also don't believe the joint in the bath was his first experience with drugs, either. He might be a bit of a shy romantic, but I don't think he's that innocent.

I thought that sex scene was one of the most honest portrayals of a young woman's first time I have ever seen. Isabelle's moans were not moans of unbridled pleasure, but she wasn't crying out in horrible agony either. The blood afterwards was not thick and gory, it was thinned by other...secretions. And that single tear she shed was just real too me. Matthew's embracing of Isa once he realized she was a virgin was also very passionate and sweet.
