Well, what was the whole point of the film?

I have been on the edge of my seat every moment seriously hoping for something to happen in the film. Finally I watched the end credits roll as if the director has played a mockery on me. Well, let me ask, what was the whole point of the film? What did the director actually intend to convey in this? I'm sure several others have the same question too.

My Favs: Hurt Locker, A Beautiful Mind, Schindler's List, Inglourious Basterds

I'm not familiar with French philosophies, politics, and history.

But I think the main idea is that the siblings represent self serving idealism that reject reality ( the world beyond the window ) will never mature beyond child's play. And those fantasy ideals will ultimately crumple when foreign ideas ( Matthew ) are thrown into the mix to challenge them. And hence, the dreamers.

Viewers with cultural knowledge on the film's references might be able to go in depth.

That supporters of communism are out of touch kids who can't take care of themselves and won't grow up. For that reason alone I love the film.

Kind of a Henry James theme - American idealism and purity vs European decadence and perversion.
