If you mean enmeshed, inappropriate family r'ships, they have always existed and probably always will.
If you mean an American student having a romantic involvement and being invited to live with a pair of wealthy Parisians, I think it was much more likely in the late 60s, the era in which the book and film were set. People were less wary and more open to others back then.
