Michael Pitt was great as Matthew. Glad it ended up to be him.

Michael Pitt is such an underrated actor. I really enjoy watching him on screen as oppossed to Leonardo di Caprio or Jake Gyllenhaal. He was perfect for this role and Bertolucci saw that.

Jake and Leo are Hollywood boys ,Michael is cinema's boy ,that is the difference between Michael and others.

actually i also love Jake and Leo but to be honest, when it comes to cinema, the real one, which has art in it ,i always say Michael because he does not try to act or does not try to show that how great he is acting,he definetly wears the character, mmakes you forget his actual character and he has no borders.he knows what the character needs, what type of acting the movie needs.watching Jake and Leo is enjoyable to spend the time but Michael,it means art, pure, beautiful art and cinema.

I agree with you that Leo is enjoyable to watch too. Leo was fantastic in that scene in Wolf of Wall Street when he took that chemical that made his bodily functions all wacked. And, of course, his role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? in which he played an autistic. Brilliant. But Michael really seems to grab me.

the cinema is art and it's not only about Hollywood.Leo's best performance was his role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape i think because in that movie,he purely own the character, the thing about Leo ,which is bothering me is,he tries, tries and tries to give such a perfect performance to show how great he is,about acting ,i mean when i watch him ,i always know that is Leo playing in a movie, playing the character i don't know how can i explaine it but for me ,he can not leave his own personality while he is acting,he acts, you know he acts and this not only for Leo,lots of the Hollywood actors do the same thing.

Michael is different from them at this point, maybe this is the reason why he always stay away mainstream movies and tries Indies.it is not acting for him, playing in a movie or doing a movie is art for him and he puts his own personality away from the character that he is playing.the other thing is he picks really interesting and different movies,i mean when i look at his filmography ,it really looks amazing THe Dreamers,Last Days,Funny Games,The Hawk Is Dying,Jailbait, etc. totally amazing movies.he maybe does not play in big movies like Wolf of Wallstreet, etc. but he truely plays in movies that does not only entertain you, that make you question about matters, that affects you.

Yes, he was an excellent choice, especially due to his androgynous beauty. I would have enjoyed seeing the love (sex) scenes between him and Louis Garrel, which ended up on the cutting room floor.

In this movie I think he was bad. He almost ruined the experience for me.
