Fantastic clever movie
Loved it, why such a flop? People are to think to understand a clever movie.

shareI agree I saw this movie in the cinema when it was released, and was pleasantly surprised with what Soderbergh and Cameron did with this movie, expecting a 'Hollywood' version of the Tarkovsky movie and getting something wich stayed rather close to the original story.
I think the reason why it was such a flop was people mistakingly thought what I tought this was going to be a Hollywood-version of the classic Tarkoysky movie, wich it isn't.The fact that James Cameron was involved did not help for taking this movie serious either as a lot of people thought Cameron equals big action scenes and explosions etc,and fans of Cameron thought that it was going to contain a lot of action and SFX and probably were disappointed when they got this cerebral existentialistic love-story in space.I am familiar with both films (have the dvd of the 2002 film)but I consider them different interpretations of the same book,I do prefer the 2002 version to the original (wich is still a great movie)because of the stunning visuals, hypnotic score and (IMO)intense emotional acting(in particular by Clooney,I think still his best role to date!).A very underrated gem wich I hope in the future people will recognise for what a great and powerfull movie this is I rated this 8.6/10.In short people who were fans of the original thought it lacked the philosophical undercurrent of the original, and fans of Soderbergh and Cameron expected something more action and SFX based.
