Would Tarkovsky turn his nose up at this?

I bet he would just on principle, cos someone else made a remake of his film. And probably also cos it had George Clooney in it.

I have no idea. It would be nice to believe that filmmakers would always give each others' work a fair viewing, especially when they're working from the same source, but pride and ego know no bounds, unfortunately.

For those who are wondering who Tarkovsky is, it is Andre Tarkovsky. He wrote and directed the 1972 version of Solaris. Here is his imdb.com page:

In the DVD commentary he is mentioned and it is said that the last two movies that Tarkovsky has seen are Last Tango In Paris and 2001.

And the original one is based on the novel Solaris by Stanislav Lem (a Polish Science fiction writer).

Soderbergh was talking about Lem and not Tarkovsky.

Tarkovsky was in fact an admirer of producer James Cameron's The Terminator (1984), so expect the unexpected.
