Mcnulty goes through his apartment and I think its pretty obvious that McNulty was expecting something different. Stringer was a drug dealer but didn't carry himself that way at all times. Mcnulty atleast knew this much I'm sure. Maybe it was the fact that the place looked perfect, or maybe it was the samurai swords, or the exotic art. It could have been the type of books Stringer had on his shelf.
My guess is McNulty has been to many criminals homes and went to Stringers thinking he would find normal things that someone with alot of drug money would have. Stringer doesn't even have a TV in the front room. Bunk was even a little confused asking "This is Stringer's?" Its one thing to carry yourself as a businessman but Stringer's place makes it seem like the man was about nothing but business, and maybe just maybe, McNulty thought he was chasing a man's that was smarter than him. Its clear to me that McNulty at that time realized he was not after some ordinary kingpin.
