I can understand how many people love this show, but...
...does anyone think this is the BEST SHOW of ALL TIME???
And if so, ... why?
"Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man..."

No, there are shows that are perfect throughout every season, like Breaking Bad. I thought the whole of season 2 and season 4 of The Wire were pretty weak.
Same here. They were interesting with the topics of harbour workers and international crime (season 2), broken school system and wasted youth (season 4), but they were boring with too many plots and characters in the backseats.
Personally, season 2 was better than season 4 because it preserve the procedural scheme of season 1, instead of sparsed little cases and lame wiretapping.

I gave up on season 2 (I think) when the female detective worked undercover and was driven in a car, and didn't know what street she was in when she got jumped.
She's in her neighborhood, she might not know where she was exactly, but she damn sure would have known what part of the city, and almost exactly where she was.
The Wire is easily the best show of all time. Anybody picking anything else is trying to hard.
shareSince everyone knows it consistently IS ranked best of all time by a high percentage of the people and by numerous critics and reviewers I suppose your question is a snarky way of saying you believe it is over-rated. Opinion noted.
I rank it the best ever because of the uncompromising novel-like depth and pace which accurately and lovingly reveals what is happening in a world I was only dimly aware of. A world which exists only a few miles from where I reside in relative suburban comfort!
Once you attune your expectations to the stately pace you enter into a meditative experience that puts you there in a way no other TV show I have ever seen does - this makes it both uniquely revelatory and incredibly fascinating. I will never forget this show or the enlightening effect it has had on me!

If I misread the tone of your comment I apologize. But to answer your question I do think it is the best and so do many, many others, hence its very high rating here and elsewhere.
Season 2 does abruptly switch to the docks but they work Barksadale and the street crews back into it as it goes along. I loved! season 2 also but to appreciate it you just have to let go of the season 1 story for a short time and trust that the creators have a plan. They do want to show us the whole Baltimore scene after all, to give us a broad perspective. After season 2 they pretty much stick go back to the corners and the "game" and the police. The season 1 promise is fully realized as we go along, that I can assure you.
It's okay. The question can easily be read as "How the hell does anyone like this crap" but thats not the case. I still watch series via DVD/Blu Ray and after season 2 I'm wondering whether or not to buy season 3 and so on.
15 bucks per season is real money and Season 2 was kind of disappointing.

You will not regret buying the rest of it!
Season 2 was the outlier and a lot of people never warmed to it because they were enjoying the Season 1 story and felt it was abruptly deserted.
But the next seasons leave the docks behind and return to the same kids on the corners we have come to care about, the wars between Barksdale and the other crews, the legend of Omar, the same police (McNulty, Bunk, and the others), city hall, etc. Still though, each season takes a little patience as they develop a slightly new variation on the theme, we see it from different perspectives - city hall, the school system, the press, the police brass etc. but the unfolding drama on the street is still the main focus throughout.
So I bought season 3 and I just finished the episode "Middle Ground".
Wow.
"Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man..."
Good man! Enjoy.
Why are you buying every season individually? You could get Amazon Prime or HBO Go and get every HBO series.
shareWhy are you buying every season individually? You could get Amazon Prime or HBO Go and get every HBO series.Because I don't have cable tv. I have a tv, a DVD player and internet.
I find it more fulfilling when its free
shareI consider it the best of all time for alot of reasons (great writing, acting, pace, etc) but one of the biggest factors for me making it the greatest show of all time is re-watchability.
I've watched the series 3 times in a 10 year span. I enjoyed the series more each time i watched it. there are so many things you miss the first time around. Mostly because there is so much to see. You catch these small things after more viewings. If you've only seen the series once I highly recommend watching it a 2nd time and you will see what Im talking about.

I realize that just because I love something, it doesn't mean it's necessarily 'the greatest of all time' However in this case, it is my favorite, and it is also the G.O.A.T.
I loved Breaking Bad, it is probably my second place pick. But the wire is better by miles.
Great story AND sending an important message easily accessible to everybody. Not an easy thing to do, tackling such a large scope.
yes there are people who think it is the best of all time
what kind of moron needs that explained to them?

I think there a shows that have better stand a lone seasons (for example I think S1 and 3 of Games of Thrones are some of the best seasons of a show made), but overall the wire is superior.
