Why didn't the clause count earlier?

Why does Scott suddenly have to get married now? Why not within a year after becoming Santa? Why can he be unmarried Santa for about 8 years and then suddenly now there's this "Mrs.Clause" thing?

I didn't get that bit. Is it explained?

And they couldn't just keep doing that?

The clause was that he had to get married within 10 years. The clause gave him plenty of time to find a wife.

Yeah, you have to realize that it takes time to fall in love and get married. The clause gave him 10 years to do that at his own pace. But because it was overlooked for so many years, Scott now had to rush it in just a few weeks. 10 years seems like a reasonable time limit; one or two years would lead to a situation shown here where the new Santa would be rushed (a situation that would have been avoided if the clause was not overlooked).

Could you imagine having to deal with transforming into santa and then being pressured into finding a wife all in the span of two years?

We've come to the conclusion that The Bird is greater than or equal to The Word.

Yeah. Who's in charge of their legal department?
Someone really dropped the ball, there.

They actually cover that.
Bernard: But it seems our number two elf, the keeper of the handbook, overlooked the single most important detail in the history of Christmas!

Curtis: Wow! One mistake in 900 years.

reply

Now that you say that, I remember Curtis' remark about 900 years.

Who wrote these rules, anyway? And, why can't they be amended?

reply

I think there are two sets of rules. The elder elves probably made the handbook that the plastic santa enforced so rigidly, and God given rules that the elves have no control over (the Mrs. Clause and all that).

reply

So then in this movie shouldn't Santa still have two years to find a wife, not 28 days? Because this movie takes place 8 years after the first one, so Scott's only been Santa for 8 years. So if he still had two years to get married, he wouldn't stop being Santa that year.

reply

Because they had to come up with a story for this sequel somehow.

reply

That was something that they didn't think of for the first Santa Clause, and I don't know when they decided ito make a sequel, but either case they didn't that was the perfect storyline for this sequel.

Suspension of disbelief.

Exactly. All he had to do was go Russianbrides.com. Those from Siberia are even used to the cold and dark!!
