Why was he sitting right in front of the door if he was not going to shoot the townspeople looking for him? Did Paul place him there because he believed in him or because he wanted to get rid of him? Did he see the infected Burt as a risk or did he think that he would weigh him down?

He was trying to save himself/Paul from the guys, I think. He does raise his gun to shoot the guys I think.
Definitely a funny death though, totally fitting for such a hilarious character

I think Burt was sacrificing himself because he had gotten so sick so quick. It worked as it created the distraction to allow Paul to have a fighting chance.
shareI actually think Burt wasn't trying to sacrifice himself. Instead, I think he was trying to shoot at the yokels when they opened the door but was just too weak/dazed from the disease that wasn't able to aim and shoot in time, thus leading to him being shot in the face.

That was definitely the intent, but I think he knew there was a decent chance he'd die as well (thus why Paul didn't sit and shoot them instead)

I was constantly cringing at the way he was handling the gun throughout the movie.
