Lacuna

Ok; their all dead, its purgatory, but as I watched it, I drew more epiphanal conclusions. The guy in white with the smiley face top, is God. The odd tattooed guy is Satan.

God: Apparently I built the place, don't remember a bean of it. I built it, and he looks after it. Did you come to see me?

Nurse: Definetly not coming to send you.

Given the closeness of 'Send your junkie friend to Hell' its obvious that Spike is being denied heaven; and instead of going to hell, rejects death.

Thoughts?

Book makes a lot more sense.

Anyone else got any views? Maybe tell me about the book? :D

Hmm, I agree quite here. The man with all the piercings was shovlling bodies into the furnace- definitely a satan-like thing to do. Also, the significance of the window disappearing - do you think this means that he has no chance of escaping now, and that he cannot reject death, and will have to go to hell or heaven one way or another?

Very late reply but - there's a book called "Urban Gothic: Lacuna And Other Trips", containing a couple of stories that weren't episodes plus a few that were, but more fleshed out. It also has a little bit at the end about the origins of Urban Gothic, though sadly nothing about the Institute/Heart storyline and how everything ties together.

Anyway, Lacuna as I understand it from the episode and book is about a couple of junkies who overdose, again. They end up in a sort-of waiting room, where the people aren't completely dead but are pretty close. Delilah, the girl in the episode, is there not because of this overdose, but because she has aids. They've known about this for a while and knew she was close to death, and the reason they were trying to steal drugs was to help her die in less pain.

The reason they've all got photos from a previous visit that they can't remember is because they were there before from a previous overdose that they survived. This time Sid isn't so lucky and dies, that's why he "moves on". Spike survives - you seem him pull through at the end when he goes backwards through the door.

The tattooed guy is the Devil as previously suggested, and the guy in the smiley face shirt is God. The warden appears to be sending everybody straight to Hell, God came to see what was happening and can't get back to Heaven anymore either. Guessing that's the idea of "The place makes you forget things".

The book pops up on eBay every now and then if you're interested, but usually for about £30 or so. I bought a copy of the first pressing limited to 100, signed and handnumbered.
