I did like the book, but couldn't understand my odd attraction as it is not to my usual taste. I have not seen the movie, so cannot comment on that.
Perhaps it is a book that might appeal more to women who have read a lot and who enjoy British humor. It has an odd setting with eccentric characters, odd events, and very dated manners/customs.
Some things are strangely funny--I laughed out loud but wasn't sure that spot was intended to be funny--some things are poignant, some a little theatric or adolescently dramatic (suited to ages of characters), some kind of romantic.
The unusual combination of elements kept me curious, interested, and surprisingly entertained. An odd mixture that captured me while Cassandra captured the castle and some guideposts for her life. Am recommending this as a selection for my local book club.
