Another school of thought is that he doesn't really want to get over her. Perhaps he wants Cassandra around because she reminds him of Rose - perhaps he realises its the closest he's going to get to her and he wants to hang on. Thinking about it, spending everyday looking at her sister is not going to help him get over Rose is it?
Possible. Which is why it was smart of Cassandra to not jump on his half-baked offer. Only time and distance will tell if they can have a genuine relationship.
Simon strikes me as a sturdy guy. He was hurting, but I think he knew he would eventually get over Rose. Hence, his acceptance of Cassandra's condition and his promise to her. I don't think it was to keep Cassandra as a replacement so he can be reminded of Rose. He always saw both of them differently and was attracted to their unique qualities. And I always read his relationshp with Rose as more of infatuation, than love. He was always so insecure with her affections and their relationship crumbled as soon as they got to know each other. Given time, he would realize that he would have never been happy with her.
In a way, SImon and Cassandra's relationship reminds me of an old piece of advice: "Ending up with Mr.Right at the Wrong time, is just as bad as ending up with Mr.Wrong."
I guess they just have to wait and see if they will get to the right time. Coz in other things, they seem right for each other.
I loved "The Painted Veil." Please do try to see it.
