Roxie or Velma?

Who do you prefer? I like Velma better. :)

Oh, Mama, she stole my garter.

Velma rules.

Roxie is an apathetic rotter. Velma is a rotter with class and charm.

I definitely like the character of Velma way better and prefer CZJ as an actress, singer, performer, etc. The scene that really nails it for me on the character of Velma is when she meets Roxie at the audition at the end of the movie and propositions her about the duet. When she drops her things, you see she is wearing tattered stockings. While she is initially ashamed/embarrassed, she is willing to put aside her pride and even take second billing to work again. I guess it is easier to like someone who has been humbled and changed (however slightly) versus someone who has not (Roxie).

That said, Renee did a great job, too, and was especially stand-out in "Roxie" and played the "dummy" amazingly well in "We Both Reached for the Gun" imo.

Velma. Catherine new what she was doing when she turned down the part of Roxie and asked to be Velma instead! She nailed it.

it makes so angry when some people say that Catherine didnt deserve her oscar for this role.

I think the Velma character was painted to be a little more sympathetic than Roxie. They were both messed up in the head, but Roxie really seemed like a socio/psychopath more than Velma, who had acted on a REAL provocation.

I'm sure most people who not only discover, but WITNESS their spouses are sexing their sisters-or-brothers-in-law would LIKE to kill either or both parties. Luckily, most don't, in some cases, simply because a weapon is not so handy.

And if the sibling being banged is an IDENTICAL TWIN, that must REALLY do a number on one's own sense of specialness, in regards to one's spouse. Who knows HOW LONG that had been going on before the fatal discovery?

Taking over the former sister act and wowing the crowd on her own must have seemed a triumph for Velma, if a sick twisted one.

In the end scenes, it seems weird but I wonder if Velma was trying to recreate a love/hate relationship with Roxie being a new "sister" of sorts. Velma seemed needier in that way (being used to having a "family" around, even a creepy dysfunctional one. She also seemed to spend more time around "Mama" as well.)

In which case, one can imagine the competition and blow-up that would inevitably occur once either one found a new man.

Velma. She seems more real and fun to be around. Roxie's too ambitious and will do anything to be famous, even trampling over others to get what she wants. I think if Velma wanted to be more famous, she would go out her way to break the news to me. But I think Roxie will just sort of go behind my back and dump me lol

As for acting, I liked them both a lot. Renee was adorable and what a pleasant surprise it was to hear her sing and watch her dance. She has a unique voice and she moves well. Catherine was such a veteran and I was so impressed with her acting here...I mean, have you seen The Haunting? I think that Catherine offered a stronger performance out of the two, but I think it also has to do with the fact that her character was stronger and more fierce compared to Renee's.

Movie— Velma. I do like Renée, but wasn't crazy about the angle they went with Roxie.

Stage show— Roxie. Her bitchiness is cute in the stage show, in the movie it's just annoying.
