The guy just CANNOT do American accents so why does he keep getting cast in these roles? He was laughable in Mindhunters (although somewhat fitting given the low quality of the movie).
Trainspotting aside, he's also a fairly terrible actor, particularly when he's cast as a bad guy (Dexter). I mean, I don't want to rail on a person, but he doesn't convince in TV or movies.
I'll disagree about the terrible actor part. He's actually pretty good when he's speaking in his natural accent. I will agree with you that he just can't do an American accent. It just doesn't sound natural... What's truly awful is the Southern accent they decided to give him in this movie.
That aside, his performance in Trainspotting, and more recently Elementary, are a much better showcase of his talents. He can actually act! He just seems like a bad actor, because every line he delivers in an American accent is unconvincing.
