This will be spoilery if I'm right but I'm almost positive Cole is Scorpion...same mark as Sub Zero...lots of yellow imagery around him...they show a flash of old Scorpion when he's looking in the mirror then cut right to old scorpion...movie will span decades...Cole goes into hiding after SZ kills his whole team...SZ eventually tracks him down and sends his blue garb assassins to finish the job...Cole gets pulled out of "retirement" and enters Mortal Kombat probably for the second time to finally defeat SZ...probably going to have 2 tournaments...first 1 everyone dies but they spare Cole or banish him...but SZ just needs to "finish him" so he tracks him for years finally finds him but basically wakes the sleeping dragon and Cole/Scorpion is set on his revenge quest

That's an interesting theory but it probably won't be....but it would make sense as Sub-zero is somehow supposed to be the main villain of this movie (?)
I think he actually might be "Johnny Cage" because he's a MMA fighter who battles in a MMA Caged off area....and if they give me the nickname "Johnny", that would be lame but almost lame enough to be in this movie.

Theories floating about:
-Johnny Cage since he's an MMA fighter
-Revived/Rebirthed Scorpion

And my favorite that I am leaning into is that he's Sub-Zero's brother. I think they should go this path since we can then have the Sub-Zero villain killed off where the brother Cole Young take his place as the good Sub-Zero and the evil Sub-Zero will be reborn or soul transferred by Shang Tsung into Noob Saibot.

Thing is, they said it's a totally new character so it might not be any of these at all.
